Project Sarah offers group counseling for abused spouses

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—The Problem: One in four Jewish women experience domestic abuse. And they tend to stay in their abusive relationships 5-7 years longer than their non-Jewish counterparts due to communal denial, skepticism, and silence. Abuse crosses all gender lines, all economic lines, and all religious lines.

The Solution: The Jewish Healing Center and Project SARAH, both programs of Jewish Family Service, are collaborating to begin a spiritual support group for Jewish women who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse.

This group is for any Jewish woman who has experienced verbal, emotional, financial, sexual, or physical abuse. The six-week group begins September 10, 2009, and meets every Thursday evening from 4:00-5:30pm at a confidential location. The group draws from religious themes and rituals to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere to encourage sharing and healing. This is a free group facilitated by Rabbi Aliza Berk of the Jewish Healing Center and Lauren Boucek, LCSW, Project SARAH Coordinator. There is a special screening process to ensure safety and confidentiality and free childcare is provided as needed. For more information or to register call the confidential Project SARAH line at (858) 637-3200 or visit www.jfssd.org.

Project SARAH (Stop Abusive Relationships At Home), a program of Jewish Family Service of San Diego, provides a safe, confidential setting for individuals experiencing abuse to explore resources and options and assists them in making critical life decisions. Project SARAH offers many services including counseling, crisis intervention, case management, educational outreach, support groups and referrals. Learn more at www.jfssd.org or call the confidential Project SARAH line at (858) 637-3200.

Call to Action:If your partner has pushed or shoved you, kept you from using the phone or visiting friends or relatives, insulted or humiliated you in private or public, destroyed your property, withheld your access to joint finances, or caused you to feel fearful in any way, you may be experiencing abuse. SARAH Listens. SARAH Cares. SARAH Helps. Call SARAH. (858) 637-3200.

JFS gets behind President Obama's 'United We Serve'

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)--President Obama has announced that the challenges America faces are unprecedented, and that we need to build a new foundation for economic growth in America.

The Administration has begun this work with dramatic new investments in education, health care, and clean energy, but they cannot do this alone. Economic recovery is as much about what you're doing in your communities, as what they’re doing in Washington and it’s going to take all of us, working together.

Go to top of right column

This summer, President Obama is calling on all of us young and old, from every background, all across this country to participate in our nation’s recovery and renewal by serving and volunteering.

From June 22 to September 11, United We Serve will begin to engage Americans in addressing community needs in education, health, energy and the environment, and community renewal. Now is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and volunteer for your community and country. Click here to find out more about volunteer opportunities at Jewish Family Service and ways you can get involved.

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—Jewish National Fund is urging supporters to plant three trees in Israel and send tree-planting certificates in honor of July 4th to President Obama and to California's two U.S. Senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, both Democrats.

JNF's suggested message for President Obama: "As the only democracy in the Middle East, it is imperative that Israel receives the full support of the United States.
