A HERALD IN ZION

A poem of Israeli contentment

By Dorothea Shefer-Vanson

MEVASSERET ZION, Israel— The following poem express my feelings at this juncture. Who knows what lies ahead?

Thoughts at 66½

My life has been
A beautiful dream.
With gifts I've been blessed,
And I've tried to do my best
To use them to the full
And not to let the pull
Of idleness occupy my time,
Though sometimes taking it easy is fine,
With books to read
And music to feed
My senses, not to mention art,
Which has always been close to my heart,
And waking up each day to the blue skies
And bright sun of Israel in my eyes.
I have indeed been fortunate,
I have so much to appreciate.

I sometimes stop and stare
To see so much sorrow everywhere,
In the present and the past,
How long will it still last?
The generations that went before
Suffered for their faith, and more,
Made victims because of their race,
Forced to leave their homes, and place
Their lives in others' hands,
Forced to flee to distant lands.
Loss and deprivation was their lot,
Because they were at the wrong time in the wrong spot.

But I have grown up in peace and plenty,
Surrounded by love enough for twenty
People like me. Parents, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins,
Nephews and nieces, of which there are dozens.
But most of all my husband and kids,
And grandchildren too, what a splendid
Bunch, each and every one.
Being together with them is always fun.
I don't know who to thank for all the good things that are mine.
I suppose it's just the luck of being in the right place at the right time.
