DVD Review

There was no end to American arrogance in Iraq

No End In Sight directed by Charles Ferguson, narrated by Campbell Scott, 2007

By Cantor Sheldon F. Merel

SAN DIEGO—My wife, Marcie and I just viewed an amazing documentary film on DVD on the Iraq war and we highly recommend that you rent it soon.  No End In Sight is a must-rent movie

It details the tragic history of failed leadership in the Iraq debacle by our Executive branch of government, and its incredible abuse of power. The film is a full exposure of the incredible mistakes, audacity, and arrogance of President George W. Bush and his cohorts, who conned America into going to war with Iraq, and then failed to plan for its postwar occupation.  The absence of proper occupation plans caused unnecessary deaths and wounding of our soldiers, Iraqi civilians and a destroyed Iraq economy.

Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney, and their small group of “advisors” did not heed the advice of military experts and made unilateral and devastating decisions.  Consequently, 3,000 American soldiers have been killed so far, and over 20,000 (and growing) returning men and women are suffering wounds of body, mind, soul and spirit. Iraqi cities were razed, and its economy destroyed. Over 300,000 Iraqi civilian have died, and millions of dollars have been wasted on outside contractors, rather than using local workers.

Go to top of right column

The film interviews soldiers, retired generals, and former cabinet staff people, who speak with full knowledge, having spent considerable time on the ground in Iraq.  The film pulls no punches. While viewing the devastating damage done by the misguided decisions of the Bush cabal, brief intermittent television clips catch Bush and his henchmen: Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, L. Paul Bremer, and Condoleezza Rice flippantly trying to cover up their decisions.

Unqualified and untrained staff were selected in key roles, and the Bush cabal made secret decisions, many times with and without Bush, who often did not even read reports from more knowledgeable sources.

The film clearly shows that after the initial occupation, our troops were specifically instructed to stand- by and not try to stop the chaotic looting.  Iraqi military and police forces might have helped keep order, but were instead disbanded.  Law and order vanished in Iraq, leaving the people desperate and starving. The Iraqi economy collapsed, and with no security in place to protect the population, insurgent militias grew in strength.

The film is appropriately named No End In Sight , for the costly losses and mistakes of leadership continues. Trillions of dollars have been wasted and unnecessary lives lost due to secret agendas and arrogant leadership.  I thought I had been aware of the gross mismanagement of the war, but watching this film blew my mind.  It was a total eye-opener. You have to rent the DVD to fully comprehend what was and is still taking place in Iraq.
