The Tarbuton adds offerings in Hebrew and Spanish this fall

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—The Tarbuton, an Israeli Cultural Center, is celebrating its third year with new classes this fall. Offerings will include guitar lessons and Israeli music, Jewish holidays in Spanish and adult Hebrew ulpan

The Tarbuton offers classes in Carmel Valley, La Jolla and Encinitas for ages 3-12 and adults.

"The Tarbuton programs began as a way for our pre-schoolers to learn Hebrew after school. The programs now support a warm Jewish community that identifies with and supports Israel with over 50 students and nearly 600 participants in weekly and monthly activities as well as holiday celebrations" said Jennie Starr, director of the Tarbuton in San Diego.

Classes are taught by teachers with teaching credentials backed by proven curriculum. The programs emphasize Israel and modern spoken Hebrew. Hebrew reading and writing classes, Karate and Playball are also conducted in Hebrew giving children the opportunity to strengthen their Hebrew conversational skills. Israeli cultural programs such as Israeli Music and Israeli Cooking are offered in English providing ample opportunities to sample Israeli culture in a non-Hebrew speaking environment as well.

Classes are one hour each and meet weekday afternoons between 3:30-6:30. Parents can select one or more hours as their schedules and interest require. The variety, however, permits the possibility for two day per week schedules that could look like: Tuesday: one hour conversational Hebrew, the second hour Karate in Hebrew. Thursday: one hour reading and writing in Hebrew followed by an hour of Playball in Hebrew.

"I am particularly happy with the growth of our adult programs in the Tarbuton," commented Starr. "For many adults, the Tarbuton provides both a social and educational outlet introducing them to new friends and providing personal growth opportunities whether its through language (Hebrew or Spanish) or through Israeli cultural pursuits such as Israeli cooking or music."

An Adult Hebrew Ulpan is offered in Carmel Valley. In addition, there are Tarbuton Adult social programs that currently meet in La Jolla, Carmel Valley and Encinitas. Adult programs are social in nature enabling people to meet other Jewish adults who share a common interest in languages, Israel and cultural programs. Adult social programs provide an active social network with a variety of activities and topics ranging from Israeli movies, Israeli cooking, Israel advocacy and relationship development with local Seniors through Hebrew and Spanish. Examples of adult programs include Cafe v'Ivrit (coffee and Hebrew) and Cafe v'Spharadit (coffee and Spanish).

Among the new programs this fall will be Israeli music for children and adults providing them the opportunity to learn how to play the guitar while learning to play Israeli songs. A children's choir that focuses on Israeli music will also be available. The adult ulpan is offered in the same time slot as children's programs so that parents can learn Hebrew while their children do - each in their own age appropriate class. We also offer Jewish Holidays in Spanish this Fall, an ideal way for children who are learning Spanish to supplement their language instruction with Jewish subject matter.

Prospective families are always welcome to visit the Tarbuton and try a class after school or stop by for an event. The web site is updated regularly with current activities. Visit http://www.tarbuton.org for more information, to see videos from class, to see the Holiday Open Houses or to review schedules. Further information is available from Jennie Starr at 858-245-9375.

Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion weighs consolidation of programs

CINCINNATI, Ohio —The Board of Governors of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) has endorsed a direction for its future structure that will allow HUC-JIR to maintain its presence in Cincinnati, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, and New York, while seeking consolidation and integration of administration, faculty, programs, and research resources.  Recruitment efforts for all programs will continue, while expanding distance education/e-learning modalities will be vigorously explored so that the academic integrity and quality of the institution can be enhanced.

Rabbi David Ellenson, HUC-JIR President, stated, “This direction calls for the unity and consolidation of our entire institution. We have been heartened by the outpouring of support and concern about the integrity and continuity of the College-Institute on the part of thousands of alumni and hundreds of Reform congregations. They have recognized the important role we play in sustaining Jewish faith, identity, and values in communities large and small throughout North America, Israel, and around the world. Through consolidation and integration, this direction enables the College-Institute to create a single institution and a single faculty, embrace new technology, and realize our vision as ‘One College.’  We will continue to work over these next months to complete a plan that achieves the targets of quality, sustainability, and presence that the Board of Governors has mandated, so that we can emerge with a more consolidated institution, strengthened through focus and integration.”

Barbara Friedman, Chair of the Board of Governors, said, “The outpouring of e-mails and letters we have received has demonstrated that our students and faculty who are serving congregations large and small throughout North America are cherished and respected, and that preserving our current sites is crucial to the strength and well-being of the Union for Reform Judaism and the Reform Movement as a whole.  We are working to maintain HUC-JIR in a way that minimizes duplication, maximizes synergy, and achieves financial stability.  This is not an easy task and over the summer we will work with faculty, students, and various constituencies to achieve these goals.

The Administration and Board of Governors leadership has committed to continuing consultation with the Union for Reform Judaism, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and various partner academic institutions to identify shared opportunities for efficiency and economy.  The results of these consultations will be presented to the Board of Governors at its Fall meeting.

Insurance broker who allegedly kept premium payments for himself arrested in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (Press Release)--California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced Monday that Benjamin Thomas Milstead, 44, of Studio City, was arrested and charged with nine felony counts of grand theft and one felony count of insurance fraud. If convicted, Milstead faces a maximum of 13 years in prison. Bail was set at $485,000. Milstead’s preliminary hearing will be held July 14.

“Insurance agents who steal from customers are breaking the law and leaving businesses exposed to untold losses,” said Commissioner Poizner. “The Department of Insurance simply will not allow dishonest agents to take advantage of their clients.”

According to CDI investigators, from June 2005 through December 2007, Milstead, doing business as LA Credit Insurance Services, accepted more than $212,000 in premium payments from nine businesses for the renewal of existing credit insurance policies and for the purchase of new policies. Milstead allegedly either failed to send the premiums to the insurance companies or only sent partial amounts of what was actually collected, retaining the money for personal use.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office prosecuted this case.
