San Diego Post 185 and Auxiliary Jewish War Veterans completed a banner year by receiving three awards at their state convention held the week end of June 12th at Hotel del Coronado, and two additional awards from the USO Armed Services Committee during awards night at Temple Center June 17.
The coveted Malinow award, a plaque given by the Department of California for the outstanding Auxiliary of the year for the highest achievements for the past year, was presented to President Lillian Yukon and Jr. Past President Binnie Brooks by Mr. Alvin Malinow, Past Department Commander.
San Diego Auxiliary was selected from 26 Auxiliaries in the state of California for this signal honor.
The Gold Seal Award, highest of its kind, was awarded to the Post and Auxiliary by the USO-Armed Services Committee at their annual award night. Past Commander J. David Brooks and Jr. Past Auxiliary Pres. Binnie Brooks accepted these awards at the Temple Center.
Other awards received by JWV members were Joe Spatz, Jean Spatz, Esther Frank, Teresa Furst, Jennie ‘Turner, Rose Neumann.
In addition to accepting all the above rewards, San Diego Auxiliary received State recognition by having Past Auxiliary President Jean Spatz elected to the office of Department Jr. Vice President.
The next regular business meeting of the Post and Auxiliary will be held Monday, July 6th at the War Memorial Bldg., 8 p.m. All members are urged to attend to see the many awards and to congratulate our new Department officer. A special refreshment and social hour is planned.
Jaycee Readies Summer Program

Details of the Camp Jaycee program will be discussed Friday afternoon, June 26, 1953, 3 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, 3227 El Cajon Blvd. All campers and parents are urged to attend to meet their counselors and discuss the program.
More than 150 youngsters are enrolled in Camp Jaycee and are looking forward to participating in swimming, hiking, roller-skating, horseback riding and many more wholesome recreational activities under the supervision of mature and trained counselors.
Parents are reminded to bring their children for the first day, Monday, June 29, 9:30 a.m., at the assembly area. Pick-up and delivery service will be provided at the close of the lst day.
Newcomers to San Diego, center members and the community-at-large are invited to attend a Hospitality Night, Sunday, June 28, 8 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center, 3227 El Cajon Blvd. Entertainment, refreshments, socializing and meeting new friends will feature the evening’s activities. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Carnot, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Price, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wax will host the affair.
The film, “It’s Your America,” will feature the 4th of July program at the Jewish community Center on Sunday, July 5th, 8 p.m. All adults are invited to attend. A discussion will follow the film presentation.

The next regular meeting of S.D. Birdie Stodel Chapter, women’s B.B., is to be held Monday, July 13th, at 12 noon at the Temple Center. An interesting program is being planned.
Youth Of Year Awards

B’nai B’rith of San Diego held their First Annual “Youth of the Year” Award night, Wednesday, June 24th, at the Roosevelt Junior High School.
The evening was under the auspices of the four Anti-Defamation League Committees. Rabbi Morton J. Cohn, representing B’nai B’rith, presented awards to 14 boys and girls selected from the high schools and parochial high schools who were chosen for outstanding service to their school and the community.

Albert A. Hutler, acting as Master of Ceremonies, introduced Dr. Clifford L. Graves, author of “Front Line Surgeon,” as the key speaker of the evening. Mr. Harvey Lewis, Jr., President
of the Board of Education, and Father George Rice, Superintendent of Parochial Schools, also said a few words in honor of the occasion.
Award winners were: Hoover H.S., Diane Koortdojian and William Maddox; Pt. Loma H. S., David Lamott and Judy Johnson; San Diego H.S., Winifred Plausse and Harvey Levitt; Kearny H. S., Bonnie Green and Charles Hanson; La Jolla H.S. John Bradley and Jeanne Hardesty; Academy of our Lady of Peace, Virginia Rodee; Rosary H.S., Gail Henderson; St. Augustine H.S., Larry Manzeo.
Ruth Brav, ADL Chairman of Birdie Stodel Chapter, assisted by Reva Garvin, Genevieve Wolfe, Ralph Feldman and Sol Randall, chairmen from Bay City Chapter, Lasker Lodge and Fox Lodge respectively, have all done an outstanding job on this project.
Father’s Day Observed

The Happy Oldtimer’s club observed Father’s Day at the Home for the Aged by paying special tribute to the male guests at the Home with an informal program which saw Mrs. Jennie Moss playing the piano and Mr. Meyer Altshuler singing old favorites. A gala evening was had by all.
Joining in the festivities were Mrs. Eve Cysner, 83 years young, who danced with Mr. Max Grossmayer, a youngster of 94. The Father’s Day celebration included a family dinner to which were invited relatives of the guests.

Plan Indoor Picnic

Plans have been completed for the Annual Picnic of the City of Hope, Senior Auxiliary, which again is to be held at Beth Jacob Center. Mrs. Jerry Aronoff, president, invites everyone to attend, Sunday, July 12th from noon to 12 midnight. This year again it is to be in the form of an indoor picnic, and is to be held at Beth Jacob Center, 4473 30th St.
Anyone wishing to volunteer, call Mrs. L. Addleson, T-1-1743, in charge of contributions; Mrs. Anne Shelley, W-5-2566, in charge of foods, and Mrs. Sam Rassin, T-3-4912, in charge of door Prize and Raffle Tickets.
