Newlyweds Honored
At Dinner Dance

Southwestern Jewish Press July 10, 1953 Page 4

Mr. and Mrs. Irvine Milton Schulman were hosts at a large cocktail and dinner-dance held at the El Cortez Hotel on June 28th in honor of the recent marriage of their son, Norman Lloyd to Janice Ungerleider, daughter of Mrs. Rose Ungerleider of Los Angeles.

The young couple were married on Sunday, May 10th, at the home of the bride’s uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Isidore Singer in Kansas City.

After a gay cocktail party in the Pacifico Room, 220 friends and relatives went to the Don Room where a dinner-dance awaited them.  The tables were beautifully decorated quite appropriately with “hearts and flowers.”

The bride is no stranger to San Diego.  Her mother, a former resident, was an early member of the Jolly 16 Club.  Her brother, Harold Baranov, and her uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Stotsky, Mr. and Mrs. Nate Strickman and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Goldberg, are all San Diegans.

Located over the largest underground lake in the United States and in the heart of America’s largest state park, Borrego Desert Resort is surrounded by fascinating oddities and scenery.
Borrego Desert Resort is only 75 miles from San Diego.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tobias entertained at a cocktail party and buffet supper on June 19 in honor of their son, David’s graduation from San Diego State College.  In town to share in the festivities for their brother, were Mr. and Mrs. Webster Phillips of San Francisco, and Mrs. Irving Kriss of Downing. David has been accepted into Navy Officers’ Candidate School and will leave July 11 to report to Newport, R.I.

Second Lt. Jordan Lansky, USAF, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lansky, has been graduated from the Air Force Officer Candidate School at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.  Lt. Lansky arrived home July 5 to spend 10 days with his family before leaving for New York where as Public Information Officer he will take an Air Force Information Course, one week of which will be spent at the United Nations Assembly. Upon completion of the course, Lt. Lansky will return to the west coast where he will work with the Civil Defense Organization of Oakland, Calif.  An assignment of this sort is very rare with the Air Force.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert A. Hutler entertained on June 28 at an Open House in honor of Leonore’s brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Ehrlich and their two charming children of Atlanta, Georgia.

Murray D. Goodrich has been elected vice-president of the Board of the San Diego County Heart Association and Charles Salik has been elected a director.

Mr. and Mrs. Max Fishman and daughter, Ronitch, have flown east for a short visit there.  From there Mrs. Fishman and Ronitch will fly to Israel to visit Mrs. Fishman’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shlomo Itzhaki, who have never met Ronitch. Mrs. Fishman, who was born near Tel Aviv, worked as a Radar Operator during the Israel War of Independence and met her American engineer husband in Tel Aviv.  She has been living in the United Stats almost four years and recently acquired her citizenship papers. As national Fund chairman of the Pioneer Women, Shoshana Group, she will gather films and material which she will present at a membership tea here, in November.

Among the many San Diegans who deserted us over the July 4th weekend were Blanche and Sig Stein, who motored to Las Vegas to visit with Sig’s uncle, and Lil and Leon Heiman.  Lil flew to L.A. to meet Leon disembarking from a cross country flight.  They spent the weekend in L.A.

Richard Moorsteen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Moorsteen, is the author of one of the articles in a book, “Soviet Economic Growth,” published by Row-Peterson, New York, and edited by Prof. A. Bergson of Columbia University.  Dick’s article covered a conference of the joint committee on Slavic Studies of the American Council of Learned Societies, held in 1952 on Long Island.

Helen and Dick Berman, who have recently returned from Houston, Texas, and are now making their home at 4552 Adair St., were honored at a cocktail party and buffet supper on July 4 by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Bland.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Snyder have been brightening up the summer season with a series of cocktail-dinner parties in their lovely garden. At one of the parties a huge birthday cake was carried in as a birthday surprise for Gladys Levenson.  At another party the honored guests were Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Moore (Selma Getz) who celebrated their second anniversary, and Mrs. Siegel, mother of Miriam Goldfarb, who celebrated her 85th birthday.

Congratulations to Dee and Al Tepper, one of our younger married couples who have gone into business.  They are now the operators of a travel service in one of the leading downtown establishments.

Mrs. Anna Pekarsky is enjoying her yearly visit East.  She is at present with her daughter, Mrs. J.R. Eisen and family, in Milwaukee, where she has been joined by daughter, Mrs. Lester Langer and her two children, for a family reunion.  She will spend the balance of her vacation in Boston with Mrs. Langer.

Double Talk
Southwestern Jewish Press July 10, 1953 Page 6

By Janet & Susan Solof

Hi gang…here we are with “Double Talk” for you. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Boy!  Was that a “crazy” party.  Well, I’m speaking of Jack Sharpe’s party, of course.  What was there?  Why all the gang which included Susie Hutler, Jerry Mendell, Dianne Fogelman, Alan Friedman, Susan Solof, Barry Goldman, Terry Kitaen, Andy Leeds, and Bernard Schertzer.  A good time was reported.

Of course, you heard about the wonderful time all the kids had helping celebrate Marilyn Smith’s sweet sixteen party.  The tables at the “El Pico” were decorated with gay Mexican hats and those enjoying the Yummy dinner were Gail Kahn, Janet Solof, Sherry Newman, Carole Fischer, Deanne Brown, and Beverly Kitaen.  Ummm…was that party sensational.

What’s this we hear about Nelson Guyer moving to L.A.  Yep, that’s right, and to make it official Gordon Levitt and Gary Cantor had a “real nervous” beach party which included all of his friends.  Good luck, Nelson.

Well, what do you think of this” Gail Kahn has left for Hawaii—watch out for those centipedes, Gail.  Paul Kaufman has just returned from a wonderful vacation in San Francisco.  Glad to be back, Paul?  David Levens left for a “cool” vacation in Mexico.  Have a good time, Dave.  Lawrence Schiller reports a wonderful time on his trip east.  He went on a Photographic Scholarship.  Not bad, eh!
