Temple Drive Gets Off To
Good Start With Initial Gifts

Temple Beth Israel initial gifts committee got off to a running start last week in its drive for funds to provide adequate facilities for their Religious School children.

Led by Edward Bland and Murray Goodrich, co-chairmen, the group raised close to $40,000 from 25 guests of the chairmen.
The generous and spontaneous gifts from those present at the dinner at El Cortez raised high the hopes of all concerned.

Irving Friedman, drive chairman, has announced that Morrie Douglas and Charles Silverman will sponsor the next dinner meeting to which contributors will be invited.


Sam Friedman Dies Suddenly

Sam Friedman, aged 82, a resident of San Diego for 13 years, passed away suddenly last Sunday night.  Mr. Friedman was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, a member of Masonic Blue Lodge in St. Paul, Minn., the Al Bahr Temple of the Shrine and Scottish Rite Bodies.

Funeral services were conducted by Rabbi Morton J. Cohn at the Johnson-Saum Mortuary on July 22.  Mr. Friedman was eulogized by the Rabbi for his sweet and kindly nature and for his devotion to the Synagogue and all its activities.  His wife, Dora, a past president of Temple sisterhood, is one of the most beloved persons in this community.

Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Cecelia Bernberg of St. Paul, 2 sisters and 2 brothers in other cities; 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Home of Peace Cemetery.

August 16 will be the date for the gala City of Hope 25th Anniversary Dinner at El Cortez Hotel in the Don Room with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.

General chairmen for the event are Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Strauss and their committee includes Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Lt. Cmdr. And Mrs. Preston Hoggard, Mr. and Mrs. Zel Camiel, Mrs. Morton Thaler, Mrs. Schott Chadwick, Mrs. Al Neumann, Mrs. Jennie Siner, Mrs. David Schwartz, Mrs. Wm. Schusterman, Mrs. R. Berman, Mrs. Ethel Berwin, and Mrs. Jerry Aronoff, local Auxiliary President.

25 years ago the local Auxiliary was founded in San Diego by Mrs. George Shelley and Mrs. J. Janowsky and all charter members will be honor guests at the event.

The officers  of the parent association at Duarte, California, will also be among honored guests.  Mr. Victor Carter, President of the City of Hope will be one of the major speakers during the evening.

Mr. Victor J. Schulman local civic leader, will serve as Toastmaster for the event and Honorary chairmen to date, include May John Butler, George A. Scott, John W. Quimby, William Shea.

Hollywood talent will be brought to San Diego especially for this affair and the usual high caliber entertainment as constantly offered by the City of Hope staff is promised.

Invitations to a garden reception August 16, 3 to 7 p.m. honoring newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Richard Harris Moorsteen have been sent out by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Moorsteen.

The young couple are honeymooning in Mexico and will return to San Diego August 10.  Dick and his bride the former Miss Patricia Ryan Lawlor, daughter of Mrs. William J. Holler, of Sea Cliff, Long Island, and Kenneth Lawlor, of Manhasset, Long Island, were married on May 15 in the study of Dr. Henry Neumann of the Ethical Culture Society of New York.

The bride was a blue gabardine suit with beige accessories and a cymbidium orchid corsage.  Mrs. William Nolan, a childhood friend of the bride and Roman Bernaut, a co-worker of the groom, were attendants.

The new Mrs. Moosteen is a model and a student at the New School for Social Research in New York.  Mr. Moorsteen, having received his B.A. at Stanford and his Masters at Columbia is now acting as economic consultant for the Rand Corp. while studying for his Ph.D. at Columbia.  He is a grandson of the late Rabbi and Mrs. Jonah Wrottenberg, San Diego pioneers.  The newlyweds will return to New York for another year and will eventually make their home on the west coast.

Famous Women’s Health Camp
to Open August 30th

S. A. Dictor, director of Kiowa Lodge, announced this week that reservations are now being taken for the grand opening of this famed women’s health resort’s eighth season August 30th.

California, long famed for unusual people and places, has in Kiowa Lodge one of the world’s truly unique resorts.  Located on the east shore of Lake Elsinore, this Shangri La for women only is a reducing and health resort to which housewives, business gals, movie stars, television actresses, and various “Girl Stouts” go to shed from five to 100 pounds through latest scientifically proven methods.  Kiowa Lodge has aptly been called a “Hippy Ladies’ Haven.” Motto of the spa is “You Cannot Wish Your Weight Away.”

The famed Kiowa Lodge low calorie diets were recently written up in Time Magazine.  On a series of television shows which began July 15th, Director Dictor will demonstrate preparation of some of the famous entrees, salads, and desserts which are served at Kiowa Lodge.  Theme of these programs will be “How to Please Your Eye and Fool Your Stomach.”

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Mintz (Annabelle Rassin) announce the birth of their first child, a daughter, Robie Jo, born July 12 and weighing 7lb. 2½oz.

Delighted grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rassin and Mr. and Mrs. Al Mintz.

New Residents
Welcome additions to our community are two young doctors and their families.  Recently moved here are Dr. and Mrs. Abe Markowitz.  Dr. Markowitz, a graduate of N.Y.U. received his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California.  He has assumed a post at State College as assistant professor in bacteriology.

Other newcomers are Dr. and Mrs. Gene Kaufman (Annette Budney) and eight month old son, David, originally of Chicago and more recently of Saginaw, Mich.  Annette is a graduate of Northwestern University and was affiliated with Sigma Delta Tau.  Dr. Kaufman attended the University of Chicago and is a graduate of the Illinois Medical School.  They will soon be making their home in Chula Vista.

We hope both of these young couples enjoy living in San Diego.

Back home for a weekend visit was Millie Berman.  Friends were delighted to see that residence in San Francisco has obviously agreed with her.  Accompanying Millie by plane back to S.F. July 14 was Sara Wyner who spent a week there seeing the sights.

Mrs. Fred Aminoff of Los Angeles, but a San Diegan at heart, has been staying with her mother, Mrs. Sam Rassin.  Gert remained long enough to meet her brand-niece Robie Jo Mintz.

Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Goldstein have just returned from a most interesting trip up the Redwood Highway to Vancouver, from there by boat to San Francisco, and home by car.  They’ve been a busy family this summer.  Daughter Ellen, with the American Friends Service Committee, is in Mexico for two months.  At the present time the group is in Jalacingo, Vera Cruz. 

Daughter Jean, is spending her summer as counselor at Girl Scout Camp Tapawingo.  In the fall Jean will join Ellen at Berkeley, Jean, seventh in her graduating class at Hoover last month, was awarded an honorary scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley.  She will major in education.

Morris Feldman wishes to thank his friends for their kindnesses during his hospitalization.  Now that he has returned home for his convalescence, he would appreciate having his friends call.

David Feldman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schwartz, a graduate of State College, with honors in Sociology, will take his Ph.D. at U.C.L.A. in Economics.

He also took honors in becoming the father of a baby daughter, Marlene, who weighed in at 8lbs, 2oz.

The stone of Molly Schifferson was unveiled in New York on June 28.  Sons Joseph Schifferson, Harry Schwartz, and David Feldman are local residents.

Mrs. Celia Jacoby announces the engagement of her daughter, Sylvia, to Stanford H. Brust.  An early wedding is planned.
