Share Summer Events
With Young Servicemen

Southwestern Jewish Press July 24, 1953 Page 5

With the summer season of entertainment and sports events in full swing, the San Diego U.S.O. Advisory Council again urges individuals and organizations sponsoring these activities to “share the fun with young servicemen based in this area.”

“Teen-age boys in uniform particularly are most anxious to receive invitations or tickets to picnics, dances, little theatre shows, concerts or sports events,” according to Irving Friedman, chairman of the U.S.O. Ticket Procurement Committee.  And remember that wherever your sons or relatives in uniforms may be stationed, the U.S.O. and community leaders are doing the same for them,” he pointed out.

Tickets and invitations may be distributed to men and women in uniform by contacting the U.S.O. Advisory Council, 521 B. Street, San Diego.

Furnished Model homes at Conrad Terrace are now open to the home buying public.  American Housing Guild, the builders, have succeeded in building a luxury styled home that is within the reach of the average pocket book.

The homes include such custom built features as:  wood paneled dining areas; Briggs Beauty ware colored bathroom fixtures; Alwyntite aluminum, sliding windows; General Electric garbage disposals; Nutone electric kitchen ventilating fans; two medicine cabinets; flush doors throughout; and 12 foot picture windows.  The extremely livable floor plans have eating space in the kitchen as well as a separate dining area, and you can go from the kitchen to the bath without going through the living room.

There are several large shopping areas nearby.  It is easily accessible from downtown San Diego and all places of employment.  The price for these homes and all this modern living convenience is only $11,650.00 and F.H.A. terms help bring the down payments down to $2200.00.  Conrad Terrace looks like a fine community to live in and raise your family.

The boys at the Naval Hospital look forward to the parties given them each month, under the chairmanship of our very capable Jean Spatz (who by the way was elected Jr. Vice President of the Department of California).  A delightful program is usually planned consisting of various games for which the winners receive prizes, followed by delicious refreshments.  The many letters of thanks received is proof that the efforts are worthwhile.

Esther Frank, Oneg  Shabbath chairman, continues to delight the boys at the Naval Training Center with home-cooked delicacies each Friday night, after Services.  Whenever a boy has a birthday a special birthday cake is baked, special refreshments served and the birthday boy receives a gift.  Many is the letter Esther has received from grateful parents, thanking her for bringing that touch of home to the boys, when most of them are so lonely.

The regular parties at the Sunshine School are being handled very efficiently by Past President Binnie Brooks, in the absence of Sunshine Chairman Mollie Ratner.  The work of preparing refreshments and entertainment for these parties is amply rewarded by the joy and happiness in the faces of these children, and the eagerness with which they await these parties.

The next regular meeting of the Auxiliary and the Post will be held on Monday, August 3rd, at 8:30 p.m. in the War Memorial Bldg., Balboa Park.  There is much work to be done, so members are urged to attend, and bring a prospective member.
