Tifereth Israel To Dedicate New Center On August 28th, 29th, 30th

Southwestern Jewish Press August 7, 1953 Page 1

A weekend of rejoicing not only for Congregation Tifereth Israel but for the entire Jewish and general community, will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 28, 29, and 30, when the newly completed Center of Tifereth Israel will be dedicated.

The new Center, occupying the corner of 30th Street and Howard, is a brick structure containing 16,000 sq. ft. of floor area.  A ceramic tile patio occupies the space between this new Center and the present Synagogue building erected five years ago.  In addition, a large recreational area, with some 6,000 sq. ft. has been black-topped and enclosed with fencing, behind the two structures.  Equipment for athletic and recreational purposes will be provided for this area.

The new Center was planned and erected over a period of two years.  Designed in the office of Milo Berenson, the building was seen through to completion by a Special Building committee, consisting of Isadore Teacher, chairman; Irving Goodman and Its Penter, co-chairmen; and the Synagogue Board of Directors.
The first floor of the Center consists of four class rooms, a large lounge, a library, Rabbi’s study, Secretary’s office, Gift shop, checkrooms, washrooms, and the main kitchen.  Two of the classrooms can be joined to form a small assembly hall.

The second floor contains nine additional classrooms, two of which can be joined together to form an assembly room seating two hundred and fifty.  Another auditorium, seating three hundred, with a large platform stage, is also on this floor.

Additional washrooms and storerooms, and a smaller auxillary kitchen, are on this floor, which also has a complete custodian’s apartment, consisting of a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom.

The lounge and patio area present one continuous panoramic sweep, opening one into the other by means of large sliding glass doors.  Special flower boxes are provided to beautify the lounge-patio area.  Ceramic designs in the floor of the patio depict the Jewish Festivals.  A large fountain will adorn the center of the patio, which is the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Zel Greenberg.

One of the most magnificent and useful features of the new Center is a special public address and inter-communication system, presented and installed by Mr. and Mrs. Abe Sackheim and son.

Dedication exercises will begin with a Special Service Friday evening, Aug. 28th at 8:15 p.m., at which time all Past Presidents of the Congregation and its affiliated organizations will be honored.  An Oneg Shabbat in the lounge and patio will follow.

The Dedication and official opening of the new Center will take place Sunday, August 30th at 2:30 p.m.  A specially prepared program, including a distinguished guest speaker, will be followed by the ribbon cutting ceremony, and a tour of the new building by the public.  The reception and refreshments will be in charge of the Sisterhood.  The Dedication Ceremonies are being arranged by a committee, under the chairmanship of Mr. Sam Addleson.

The entire community is cordially invited to all the celebrations.

Silber-Katz Rites solemnized
Southwestern Jewish Press August 7, 1953 Page 2

After honeymooning in Catalina, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Katz will reside at 4325½ Winona Ave. in East San Diego.  They were recently married at a gala garden wedding held, overlooking the city, in the garden of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Rodgers, College Heights.

The bride, the former Miss Barbara Silber, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Silber of San Diego, and Mr. Katz is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Katz of Des Moines, Iowa.

Rabbi Monroe Levens performed the traditional ceremony and attending the bride were her sister, Diane Silber, as maid of honor, and Miss Susanne Bowman, cousin of the bride, as flower girl.  Irving Kaplan of Des Moines served as best man, Mr. Herb Bregman, Mr. Henry Bowman, Mr. Leon Elkind, and Mr. Henry Raymor served as canopy bearers.

The bride wore a gown of imported embroidered organdy over nylon tulle designed with a fitted princess bodice of organdy, a scalloped boat neckline, over a two-tiered tulle coronation skirt.  Her fingertip nylon veil was clasped with a pearl head piece.  The maid of honor and flower girl wore matching gowns of blue and yellow organdy respectively.  The bride carried a white Bible with gladioli and carnations on top with streamers of stephanotis.

A reception, immediately following the ceremony, was held in the garden.  Mrs. Silber wore blue organcy with pink accessories, while Mrs. Katz wore blue crepe.

Among the out of town guests were the groom’s mother and Irving Kaplan of Des Moines, Miss Carol Scheckman, Mr. Herb Bregman, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rosenberg of Los Angeles.
The bride is an upper division education major at State where she is a member of Delta Zeta sorority.  The groom attended Iowa State College and Drake University.  He is now serving in the Navy after returning from a year in Korea as a medical corpsman.  Both are on the teaching staff of the Beth Istael Temple.
