Seacrest Village runner up in
U-T's retirement community poll


ENCINITAS, California (SDJW)--Seacrest Village Retirement Communities--formerly known as San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged--won runner-up honors in a "Best Retirement Home" poll by the San Diego Union-Tribune and its online affiliate, Sign-On San Diego. Seacrest placed second to Mount Miguel Covenant Village>

Seacrest, which operates senior residence facilities in Encinitas and in Poway, placed ahead of such retirement homes as White Sands of La Jolla, Lawrence Welk Retirement Village, Casa Manana, La Costa Glenn, Wesley Palms Retirement Communities, La Vida Real, Casa de las Campanas, and Fredericka Manor.

Pam Ferris, executive director, commented in an email: "We are certainly in good company which makes us all very proud!"



Arranged—movie about religious marriages—to be lecture subject of SDSU Prof. Lawrence Baron

SAN DIEGO (SDJW)--Professor Lawrence Baron, who occupies San Diego State University's Abraham Nasatir Chair in Modern Jewish History, will lecture at the San Diego branch library at 4155 Governor Drive following a screening at 6:30p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 5, of the movie, Arranged.

The movie tells the story of an Orthodox Jewis woman and a Muslim woman who both teach in a Brooklyn public school and who both are having marriages arranged by their religious families.

The movie was shown locally at the San Diego Jewish Film Festival. It also was the subject of a review by San Diego Jewish World columnist Sara Appel-Lennon. Here is the link.


SAN DIEGO (SDJW)--Tifereth Israel Synagogue is sponsoring outdoorKabbalat Shabbat services at 6:30 p.m. Friday, August 21, and again September 4, as part of its "Pray at the Park" program to meet new and prospective members.

The park, in this case, is in Tifereth Israel's own backyard, the Shekhter Family Gan Yeladim (Children’s Park) at 6660 Cowles Mountain Blvd., entrance from Tommy Drive.

"Bring lawn chairs, blankets and enjoy the relaxed outdoor surroundings," instructs an announcement from the Conservative congregation in the San Carlos area of San Diego. "We are encouraging everyone to pack a dairy / pareve picnic dinner to enjoy following the service. Bring enough for yourself and some extra to share with your friends."

Furthermore,recommends Beth Klareich, the congregation's program director, "
Let the kids enjoy the playground while you schmooze with friends."

Groundbreaking today for cruise ship terminal on Broadway Pier

SAN DIEGO (SDJW)—Port Commisison Chairman Stephen Cushman will preside over groundbreaking ceremonies for a new cruise ship terminal at 10 a.m. today at the Broadway Pier. Featured speakers will be architect Luis Ajami and Carlos Torres de Navara, director of strategic planning for Carnival Cruise Lines.

Carnival, which in addition to its namesake brand owns a number of other cruise lines including regular port user Holland America Line, advanced $12 million to the Port of San Diego to construct the $21.1 million, environmentally friendly, 52,000-foot facility which is expected to be completed December 2010, according to a Port press release.

Cruise ships currently utilize the aging cruise ship terminal on the nearby B Street Pier, with ships on days when there are more than two in port using the Broadway Pier.

Last year, 297 ships called in San Diego.


Five Jewish incumbents endorsed for 2010 by S.D. Democratic Club

SAN DIEGO (SDJW)—San Diego Democratic Club, a predominantly gay club, has endorsed five Jewish incumbents in advance of next year's federal elections. These included U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer of California and Members of Congress Barney Frank of Massachusetts, Jared Polis of Colorado, and Susan Davis and Bob Filner, both of San Diego.

Zenger's Newmagazine, which closely covers the gay community, reported in its August issue that some members of the club faulted Davis for voting funds to support American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and urged that the club withhold its endorsement until learning if the congresswoman will be opposed in the primary election. Nevertheless, her endorsement carried by a vote of 22-14, meeting the 60 percent threshhold for endorsement.



Filner to celebrate 30 years in public office August 30

CHULA VISTA (SDJW) -- Congressman Bob Filner (Democrat-San Diego) plans to celebrate 30 years in public office with an outdoor party from noon to 2 p.m., Sunday, August 30, at Will T. Hyde Friendship Park, near the Chula Vista Library at 4th Avenue and F. Streets.

In 1979, Filner, then a history professor at San Diego State University, was elected to the San Diego Unified School District board. He went on to serve on the San Diego City Council and later was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where today he serves as chairman of the Committee on veteran Affairs.
