Thursdays with the songs of Hal Wingard, z"l

SAN DIEGO—Here are three songs in which Hal Wingard considered a slow turtle who tried, a slow personage who never seemed to finish, and a set of questions that argue in behalf of the turtle. #176 -- Gungah Din
#195 -- Slow
#148 -- What's the Good?

#176, Gungah Din

There lived a little turtle;
His name was Gungah Din;
And as he ran the race of life
He always ran to win.
No matter who the runners,
From cats to kangaroos,
Gungah Din would give his all,
Although he'd always lose.

But losing doesn't matter.
No, it's not the crucial part.
It's rather that you do your best
And keep a winning heart.

Then one day, still while racing
And still in final place,
Gungah Din just up and died.
He lost his final race.
When summoned for his judgment
Before the Pearly Gate,
He wondered whether heaven
Or hell would be his fate.

Chorus

So Gungah faced the problem
That all who run must face:
Does death bring compensation
To those who lose the race?
What happened to this loser,
Who never once could win?
Well, the gates of heaven opened.
Quite simply: Gungah Din!

For losing doesn't matter.
No, it's not the crucial part.
It's rather that you do your best
And keep a winning heart.

#195, Slow

He's slow. . .as maple syrup,
That drips. . .from maple trees.
It takes. . .him thirty minutes
To make. . .a single sneeze.

He's slow; he's slow;
He's so damn slow.
You'll never know,
If he's stop. . .or go.

He spends. . .almost a morning
To lace. . .his shoes up tight.
Before. . .he ends his breakfast
It's time. . .to say goodnight.

He's slow; he's slow;
He's so damn slow.
You'll never know,
If he's stop. . .or go.

He takes. . .an hour to shower,
And half. . .a day to shave,
He's sure. . .to take a lifetime
Before. . . . . .he'll reach his grave.

He's slow; he's slow;
He's so damn slow.
You'll never know,
If he's stop. . .or go.

#148, What's The Good?

What's the good if I am good for nothing?
What's the good if nothing's good for me?
It ain't no good if I am good for nothing.
It ain't no good if nothing's good for me.
It ain't no good.
It ain't no good.

What's the good if I ain't good for something,
If there ain't something good enough for me?
It ain't no good if I ain't good for something.
If there ain't something good enough for me.
It ain't no good.
It ain't no good.

What's the good if I am good for nothing?
What's the good if nothing's good for me?
It ain't no good if I am good for nothing.
It ain't no good if nothing's good for me.
It ain't no good.
It ain't no good.
It ain't no good.
It ain't no good.
