Southwestern Jewish Press August 21, 1953 Page 1

Rabbi James G. Heller {at right}, president of the Labor Zionist Organization of America-Poale Zion will be the guest speaker at a public meeting to be held on Saturday, August 22 at 8 p.m. in the synagogue of Tifereth Israel.

Considered one of America’s outstanding orators, Rabbi Heller has been a leader in American and Jewish life for many years.  He is a past chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, a senior Rabbi of the Isaac M. Wise Temple in Cincinnati for 31 years and has played an active role in communal affairs of that city for many years.

At the recent meeting of the Jewish Agency Executive in Jerusalem, called to discuss the future of the world Zionist movement, Rabbi Heller was one of the four heads of American Zionist Organizations to attend.  His first stop upon returning from Israel has been to attend the ZOA Western Region conference held on August 16th in Los Angeles and it is indeed a privilege to have this distinguished personality a guest of San Diego Jewry following the Conference.

Sponsoring this meeting are the Chaim Weizmann Poale Zion, the newly organized Ben Zvi Poale Zion and the Negba and Shoshanna groups of Pioneer women.  There will be a musical program and following the meeting a reception will be given in Dr. Heller’s honor.  Admission is free and there will be no solicitation of funds.

Working with Mr. M.S. Berlin, general chairman in arranging this meeting are Maedelle Richlin, co-chairman and Bess Borushek, publicity.  Those on the reception committee are the following:  Mmes. M. S. Berlin, Phil Abrams, Fred Yaruss, Harry Weitzman, Natalie Linton, and Miss Helen Berlin.

Jewish Community Center To Break Ground For New Building On 54th Street
Southwestern Jewish Press August 21, 1953 Page 1

Mr. Herbert Haimsohn, President of the Jewish Community Center, announced that the Center had acquired a 5½ acre tract, located on the east side of 54th street, 300 feet north of University Avenue, for the purpose of erecting a building to house the physical, recreational and social facilities now existing at 3227 El Cajon Blvd., where constricted quarters provide only a fraction of the normal functions of a Center.

Opposite New City Park

The newly acquired site is directly opposite a 30-acre tract on which the City plans a public park and recreational development.  The 5½ acres obtained by the Jewish Community Center were purchased from Mr. Herbert P. Lipp of San Diego.

Others Invited
The Center obtained this sizeable land area with an eye to the future, hoping to interest other Jewish communal organizations like the San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged, in building on the same tract.  The latter are now seeking a parcel of land for building a new, larger home for the aged, and it is felt that it would effect both an economy and convenience to accommodate both enterprises on jointly held land.  Discussions are now under way between representatives of the Center and a committee for the Home for the Aged headed by Mr. Victor Schulman.

Fund Sources

The purchase of the tract was made possible by a loan obtained from interested local Jewry by a committee headed by Seymour Rabin and Edward Breitbard.  The Building Site Committee of the Jewish Community Center was responsible for the acquisition of the land.  This group was headed by Sid Rose and William Schwartz as co-chairmen and included Edward Breitbard, James Effron, Seymour Rabin, A. J.Bard, Rod Horrow, Mack Esterson, Maury Novak, Henry Goldy, John Ruskin, Mort Thaler, and Morrie Douglas.

Years of Effort
Now on the threshold of a Community Center that a number of citizens have worked on long and diligently for fruition, plans are in the making for a tremendous fund-raising drive.  Every family’s contribution will be solicited toward making possible a Center building large enough and with sufficient facility to take care of the present and future needs of our fast-growing community.
