Orthodox community schedules a Sukkot celebration Thursday
SAN DIEGO – A variety of Orthodox congregations and institutions are sponsoring a Sukkot celebration from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 8, at Boomers, 6999 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego. As no money may exchange hands at Boomer’s, tickets should be purchased by today’s deadline at Beth Jacob Congregation, Young Israel, Congregation Adat Yeshurun or at Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School.
Tickets for adults and children over 11 are $20, and under 11 are $15. They entitle holders to enjoy arcades, bumper boats, mini-golf, lazer tag, kits county fair, and batting cages.
A kosher Sukkah will be erected in which meals will vary in price from $6 to $8.50. Selections include Chicken Caesar Salad w/Roll & Fruit; Hero Roll w/Corned Beef / Turkey Breast, Coleslaw & Fruit; Caesar Salad (vegetarian) w/Roll & Fruit; and Chicken Nuggets & Chips, Coleslaw & Fruit. Other snacks including candy apples, chips, popcorn and a giant cookie will be sold separately.

Health fair and hoedown Nov 6 at JFS College Avenue Older Adult Center
SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—The College Avenue Older Adult Center will offer the Healthy Hoe-Down Health Fair, Flu Shots & Luncheon. The Health Fair and Flu Shots will take place Friday, November 6, from 9:30 – 11:30 am, followed by a luncheon at 12 pm. No reservations are necessary.
The Sharp Grossmont Hospital Senior Resource Center will offer seasonal flu shots to seniors, their caregivers and high risk adults. A $2 donation is requested for the flu shots. The Senior Resource Center will not be providing vaccinations for swine flu.
The Health Fair will include representatives from those in the industries of healthcare, homecare companies, senior advocacy organizations and retirement communities.
The Health Fair will be followed up with a line dancing demonstration and lesson from 11:30 am – 12 pm. A Western flavored BBQ style lunch will be served at noon. The lunch is offered to seniors for a suggested donation of $3.50 and a fee of $6.00 for all others. Following lunch “The Rhinestone Grannies” will perform at 12:30 pm.
The College Avenue Older Adult Center, a program of Jewish Family Service of San Diego is a dynamic and busy center offering a variety of classes such as exercise, music, movies, bridge, art, drama, music and informative lectures. We will have entertainment by the Rhinestone Grannies and a line dancing class to provide a great form of exercise. A BBQ themed lunch will be available at 12 Noon. The health fair is a free event. Opera Presentation with Dr Nicolas Reveles, on Giuseppe Verdi’s, Nabucco—A presentation on Verdi’s opera Nabucco, set during the Babylonian Exile of the Jews. He will help to explain the effect that opera can have on a person’s inner life, spirituality and personal growth. There will be musical excerpts to help illustrate various aspects of the work. Nuts About Nutrition—Join Melissa Alwood as she directs our new weekly health series on nutrition for Older Adults, Nuts About Nutrition. In our new interactive program we will be learning about food groups, food’s role in the body, shopping tips, cooking tips, and the latest information and research on how proper food intake can enhance your quality of life. Come to our first fun workshop to learn about the basics of food and nutrient needs for older adults.
