 SAN DIEGO—Dear Reader, Before reading this column, take a look at the accompanying picture to the right.. Now look closer. That’s me! There I am actually relaxing in an onsen. (This could be you, so read on to find out how.) When I first got a glimpse of this digital foreigner in soft repose, I sat back, smiled, then gave myself a HUGE pat-on-the-back for taking advice from Talmud, which, for me, meant taking a day off from work to care for myself… so I would be better able to care for others.
In the Talmud, a story is told of a man and his son who both lost an item. The rabbi encourages the son to find his own belonging before helping his father search for his. Is this selfish? They contend that it is a priority for us to take care of our personal needs so we are better equipped to offer help to others with theirs.
