America Israel Cultural Foundation —Concert—A concert featuring three outstanding young Israeli musicians will take place in Congregation Beth El’s new sanctuary Sunday, November 1 at 6:30 p.m. With its excellent acoustics, the synagogue at 8660 Gilman Drive will provide a marvelous venue in which to hear these talents. Clarinetist Moran Katz, fresh from winning first prize in Germany’s International Clarinet Competition (10,000 Euros and a debut performance with the Southwest German Radio Orchestra), will be joined by her younger sister, Cellist Linor Katz. The gifted cellist recently soloed with the Czech Radio Orchestra in Prague and performs regularly with the West Eastern Divan Orchestra made up of young Palestinian and Israeli musicians under the direction of Daniel Baremboim. The two young women will be assisted at the piano by Eliran Avni, a pianist who Ma’ariv has hailed as “the new hope of Israeli Music,” and the New York Times lauded for his “ironclad technique and ample suppleness.” All three performers have soloed with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and all three are recipients of America-Israel Culture Foundation grants. Moran Katz and Eliran Avni have received their degrees fromthe Juilliard School in New York, Moran, her BA and MA, Eliran, his BA, MA and DMA. Linor is attending the New England Conservator in Boston. Their program will feature solo selections for cello and clarinet, accompanied by the piano, then all three will join forces. The cellist will open with Max Bruch’s “Kol Nidre” to be followed by works by Tchaikowsky and Cassado. The clarinetist will perform Four Souvenirs by Schoenfield, “Samba,” “Tango,” “Tin Pan Alley,” and “Square Dance.” Moran, Linor and Eliran will form a piano trio for the second half of the program in works by Muczinski and Piazzolla. Although Moran Katz has been heard in San Diego during several successive years, thanks to the untiring efforts of July Galper, this will be her younger sister Linor's and Eliran Avni's San Diego debut. Next January 10, July Galper will be receiving special recognition at the AICF Gala Concert in New York for her work on behalf of their scholarship recipients. In addition to Moran Katz, Galper has brought outstanding Israeli artists on the violin, the mandolin, the cello and the piano to San Diego. She has befriended them and helped nurture the careers of these Israeli talents. Sunday's program promises to be one of the steller evenings which she has helped arrange. Old Globe Theatre —Sammy—The late Sammy Davis Jr. broke ground as an entertainer and as an interreligious figure. His conversion to Judaism was a sensation, with Davis later explaining that after the car accident in which he had lost an eye, he had reflected with singer Eddie Cantor about the similarities between the Jewish and American experiences. Years later, he appeared on a television special with Nancy Sinatra, and the kiss they gave each other in greeting was believed to have been the first inter-racial kiss ever seen on television. Nancy's father, Frank Sinatra, was, along with Davis, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop were members of a high-flying group of popular entertainers known as the "Rat Pack." Sammy Davis, Jr., the man, his songs, and dancing are the subject of a world premiere to be performed at the Old Globe, September 19 through Nov 8, with the title role to be filled by Obba Babatunde, whose own career was influenced by Davis. San Diego Repertory Theatre—Long Story Short—The San Diego Repertory Theatre will present October 3-November 1 Long Story Short, a musical based on a 50-year love affair between Hope, an Asian American woman, and Charles, a Jew who moved to Los Angeles from New York. Written by Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda, and starring Robert Brewster and Melody Butiu, the musical is described as a "timetraveling romance that begins with a blind date and goes all the way to old age in one exotic song-filled evening!"
