Chargers lose despite fans' enthusiasm;
I view houses for historic designation

Sunday, January 14, 2007

San Diego, CA—All of San Diego was very excited; today was game day, the day that the San Diego Chargers would take on the New England Patriots in an American Football Conference playoff game. We had home field advantage; a better record; the fans were stoked, the game was sold out, and for a while it looked like the Chargers would indeed win.  But fumbles by the Chargers enabled the Patriots to capitalize on their mistakes.  The Patriots won 24-21 on a field goal with only a few minutes left in the last quarter.  "There was no joy in Mudville..."

On the way to picking up Jerry Schaefer and his dog Bubba on a field trip for the City of San Diego's Historic Resources Board, on which we both serve, I passed Qualcomm Stadium and saw evidence of the mounting fan fever as game time neared.  Eventually when I got home, a few hours before game time, I also saw a string of balloons in Charger colors decorating one of the Mission Gorge businesses.

Evidence of Charger mania could be seen throughout town today, with everyone convinced that the San Diego
team would defeat the New England Patriots (notwithstanding all their Super Bowl exerience).  It wasn't to be.

Jerry Schaefer and Bubba, his standard poodle, accompanied me on a "windshield tour" of homes and buildings
up for historical designation.  The building on right is at 1701 National Avenue in the Barrio Logan Community.

Jerry and I had 26 properties we were required to physically look at in preparation for the January 25 meeting of the City of San Diego's Historical Resources Board. Of these 21 were located in an area of town known as Burlingame, which has a voluntary historical district.  Today's houses were ones that had not been previously volunteered for inclusion in the district.   Before we got to Burlington, however, we drove to the Barrio Logan property to see a commercial property on National Avenue.

With Jerry navigating, me driving, and Bubba ensconced on a blanket on the back seat, we next toured the homes of Burlingame that will will come before us.

As Sandi and Shahar had a balloon gig in the evening, Shor came over for dinner.  For a while he raced toy cars with his Grandma and Grandpa on the kitchen floor.  Later, I read him a children's book about the Torah, his favorite subject at Soille Hebrew Day School.
