Writings about Morris Casuto
-1987-
December 24, 1987 – “American Nazi Skinheads in
San Diego?” San Diego Jewish Times, p. 3:
“A bunch of cowardly bastards who sneak in the night.” That’s the
way Anti-Defamation League Director Morris Casuto described those responsible
for defacing signs at Temple Emanu-El and Tifereth Israel Synagogue with
swastikas. The vandalism occurred
last Shabbat December 5. A swastika and “Go home Commie Jew” was sprayed on
the San Diego Jewish Times building about the same time. Casuto, who has a reputation as an eloquent and moderate
spokesman, was clearly angered by the attacks. He speculated that so-called
skjinheads may have been responsible as a way of drawing attention and prestige
to themselves…Rabbi Martin S. Lawson of temple Emanu-El indicated that the
Jewish community should be made aare of the incidents, but did not want general
media coverage. The temple’s
sign, which related to the congregaton’s expansion, was removed the next day.
Evidence of the damage at Tifereth Israel and the Jewish Times was not
visible by the end of the weekend. “It’s
really dismaying that there could be such crazies loose here,” sighed Rabbi
Aaron Gold, spiritual leder of Tifereth Israel.
“It could be the work of vicious murderers like the skinheads or…jut
kids,:” he continued….

June 23, 1988—"Births:
Simon Lev Casuto," San Diego Jewish Times, p. 6: Simon Lev
Casuto was born on May 20 at Grossmont Hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 15 ounces,
and was 20 inches long. "The baby has more hair than his
father," said Simon's father, Morris Causto, director of the
Anti-Defamation League. Simon is the son of Morris and Doreen Casuto. He has an
older brother, Loren Seth (5) who talks about his little brother all the time.
"Seth has shown a great deal of love," said Morris. The Casuto family
celebrated B'rit Milah on May 27. A minyan of family and friends gathered
in the Casuto home for the ceremony led by Rabbi Martin Levin. Dr. Gary Blake
performed the circumcision. Simon was given the Hebrew name Shimon Levi in
memory of his grandparents, Samuel and Laura Casuto. Hertha Albaugh,
Simon's maternal grandmother, was present. Following the ceremony, the Casutos
and their guests enjoyed a buffet luncheon.
