We Were There
Southwestern Jewish Press, March 13, 1947:
By Albert Hutler
"Does God Live in America?" This was a question of a 13-year-old
Jewish boy when he was handed an orange by a Joint Distribution Committee worker
at a displaced persons center in Germany. The question is a very simple
one and yet it tells the complete story of the 150,000 Jewish children who are
still alive in displaced persons centers. The young boy who had grown old far
beyond his years in his simple question presented a graphic picture of what had
happened to Jewish children in Europe. We are not speaking of the million Jewish
children who are now dead but we are speaking of those who are still alive. They
could not work; they required food and a certain amount of care and then they
worried the adult Jewish population which was bad for their work speed.
The simple question shows what has been done to the minds of Jewish children. They have little feeling of love, no sense of security and no feeling of being wanted by anyone. In 1946 American Jews with their $100,000,000 gave these children the opportunity to exist. In 1947 they need to be given more than food or shelter or clothing. These 150,000 children are looking for security and for love. These can only be given to them by we who are free and know what security means and whose children know what it means to be loved.
These children are tired and weary of tragic disappointments. They are tired and ready to yield to despair. They can be rescued from misery by you through your generous support of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego in the coming unprecedented campaign for $350,000. Think of your children and then remember that but for us they stand alone.
