This super duper date party began with a delicious supper for Paul 'n Jane Cohn, Lenny 'n Ethel Schwartz, Gary Chenkin 'n Eileen Rivers; Ernie Addleson 'n Linda Solof, Lou Kleinman 'n Esther Lustig, Bill Kollander (sic, Kolender) 'n Lois Kaufman, Bobby Beck 'n Bobby Glickman, Lee Barlow 'n Joyce Addleson. Next day everyone had breakfast at Yours Truly's home after a fine slumber party.  The boys slept at Paul/s. The rest of the day was spent playing ping pong, croquet, bike riding, etc. All-in-all it was a frolicking weekend.

July 6, 1951—"Camp Jaycee Off to Good Start," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: Registration for the first two weeks of the Jewish Community Center Day Camp exceeded expectation and broke all previous enrollments, according to Al Hutler, administrative director. 116 campers participated in the first period of the camp with an average attendance of 95 boys and girls a day.  Because of the man requests a waiting list has been opened for subsequent weeks....Ably led by Dave Anfanger, San Diego City School teacher, the camp is approved by the city schools, City-County Camp Commission, the YMCA and the San Diego Camping Association.  Anfanger is assisted by a staff of counsellors. They are Bella Demsey, Nancy Straus, Thor Raun, John Westrick, Barbara Solomon, Harold Krinistsky, Nancy Bloom, Harvey Goodfriend, Paul Kaufman, Bill Kolender, Sam Sosna....

July 20, 1951—Linda Solof, "Linda's Lookout," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: ... A happy birthday came to Manon Haas in more than one way. Besides having a wonderful party she heard the good news that her brother, Pete, was arriving home on leave from the aRmy. He had been stationed in Hawaii.  Jake Barruchi who left the same time as Pete is also back on leave. Manon's party was pretty special too and Cecille Oglesby, Burt Sharpe, Eileen Rivers, Bill Kollender (sic, Kolender), Linda Solof, Shearn Platt, Lois Kaufman, Lee Barlow, Donna Godes, Donn Kobernick, Bunny Goodman, Dick Godes and Jerry Schissel really enjoyed themselves. August 3, 1951—Bobby Solomon, "The Tattler," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: ...Also home from Cal is Nancy Strauss who is spending a lively (putting it mildly) summer here as group leader of the JCC Day Camp for the "dear" kiddies. As long as we're speaking of the day camp this is a good place to give a pat on the back to a few fellow camp counsellors: Dave Anfanger, the campl's lord and master; Nancy Bloom, Sammy Sosna, Harvey Goodfriend, Deane Brown, Jane Cohn, Paul Kaufman, Harold Krinitsky, Bill Kolinder (sic, Kolender) and the rest who are trying so hard with the little bra....angels....

'Not Too Early to Think of Summer," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 14: Camp Jaycee, San Diego's outstanding summer camp program for children, sponsored by the Jewish Community association will begin its 1952 season on Monday, June 23rd and run for a minimum period of six weeks as decided at a pre-camp committee meeting held several weeks ago. This year there will be a change in the age ranges of the boys and girls who attend. Because of the request for an older group the maximum age will be extended so that the age range will now be between the age of 5 and 14.  Staff members returning to the day camp are Dave Anfanger, who will again be head counselor; Bella Demsey, Nancy Strauss, David Krinitsky, Nancy Bloom, Harvey Goodfriend, Phil Kaufman, Bill Kolender, Esther Weitzman. Wayne Fry, principal of Alice Berney School, will also join the staff. Other staff members will be announced as they are hired.  A parents day camp committee has been formed headed by Mrs. Sam Bennett assisted by Mesdames Mack Freedman, Sam Lennett, Milton Roberts, Harold Stolarsky, Irving Friedman, Richard Levi, B. Rosenbaum, Rose Weitzman, David Jaffe, H. Rosenbaum and William Goldfarb.

That means about this time sun burns are in style and the favorite "hang-out" for the "Kosher Krowd" is the beach. So—if you haven't gotten your sunburn yet, get on the ball and join the gang. Among those seen sunning themselves at the beach recently and having a gay time, were Dick Godes, Paul Kaufman, Gary Chenkin, Larry and Shirley Kaufman, Bill Kolender, Manon Haas, Jerry Adler, Janet Solof, Stan Camiel, carole Fischer and Susan Solof...

May 30, 1952— "Staff All Set For Camp Jaycee," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 10: With over 75 campers already enrolled in advance registrations, plans for Camp Jaycee, San Diego's Jewish Community Center Camp, have been completed both as to program and staff, according to Al Hutler, Director. Such has been the interest shown by parents and children that unless application is made at once many may have to be placed on the  Camp waiting list. With the addition of 5 staff members, the camp has been able to increase its facilities to handle a maximum of 125 campers as against 104 which were taken care of last year. Camp Jaycee is proud of its staff which will again be headed by David Anfanger, as head counselor, assisted by Wayne Fry, principal of the Alice Birney School.  Others counselors will be: William Murphy, teacher, S.D. Schools; Esther Weitzman, teacher, S.D. Schools; Mrs. Belle Demsey, former counselor; Nancy Strauss, S.D. State College; Barbara Solomon, UCLA; Sam Sosna, Stanford Univ.; Matilda Faulkner, Vassar; Harvey Goodfriend, former camper and counsel (3 yrs.); Ben Press, special counselor; Consuelo Gambro, S.D. State College; Fred Kroll, elementary teacher, Descanso; Nancy Bloom, former counselor; Naomi Hirsch, Bill Kollender (sic, Kolender), Alice Aufricht and Nelson Guyer are Jr. Counselors. Pre-registration is already in progress but may still be made by calling Mr. Hutler or Mrs. Demsey at Main 5172. A deposit of $5.00 is required with each registration. First preference, until official registration, will be given to members of the Jewish community. Official registration will open on Monday, june15, and run through Thursday, June 19, at Temple Beth Israel Center, which has again been generously donated for the use of the Day Camp by the board of directors of the Temple.

October 14, 2005—Susan Plese, Public Affairs Officers, San Diego Sheriff's Department, "Sheriff Kolender Promotes 19 and Presents Awards," news release: Sheriff Kolender will promote 19 members of the department (8 sworn and 11 professional staff) at an October 18th ceremony during which several awards will also be presented.  The quarterly ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the San Diego Mission Valley Hilton. One captain will be promoted to the rank of commander; one lieutenant to the rank of captain; one sergeant to the rank of lieutenant; and five deputies to the rank of sergeant.  The Medal of Lifesaving will be presented to a deputy who saved an 18-month-old baby found at the bottom of a swimming pool in Ramona. Other awards being presented include: (2) Certificates of Commendation; (2) Letters of Commendation; and (2) Civilian Commendations.  Employees who have worked for the County for 20 and 25 and years will also be recognized for their service.

October 28, 2005—Bill Horn, "Emergency Backup for Sheriff's Department," A Word from Supervisor Bill Horn (email newsletter):  Part of our continuing effort to prepare for the unexpected involves a Sheriff’s Department backup data recovery center in North County. I’m pleased to say the Board of Supervisors joined me in accepting a $500,000 federal grant that makes a secondary backup system possible. I appreciate Sheriff Kolender and his team working to establish and maintain more stability in the Sheriff’s Department’s data infrastructure. In the event a catastrophic event or power outage causes our primary facility in Kearny Mesa to go offline, we’ll be able to process information technology and communications operations. The new data recovery center in Vista is expected to be completed by June of next year.

November 4, 2005—Susan Plese, “Sheriff Kolender announces Undersheriff Barry Zuniga’s retirement and the appointment of Assistant Sheriff Bill Gore to the Position of Undersheriff,” Sheriff’s Department news release:  Today Sheriff Bill Kolender announced Undersheriff Barry Zuniga’s intention to retire effective December 15, 2005.  Sheriff Bill Kolender said “I commend Barry Zuniga for his 31 years of exemplary service to the citizens of San Diego County.  He has provided quality leadership in many facets of the department and the county. Barry is a trusted friend and partner.  He has served as the head of my management team.  I wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement.” Zuniga has served as second in command of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.  He oversees the daily operation of the department.   Zuniga, a lifelong resident of San Diego, joined the Sheriff’s Department as a deputy in July 1981 after serving six years as a Chula Vista Police Officer.  His career highlights include command of both the Law Enforcement Services Bureau and the Detention Services Bureau as an assistant sheriff; commander in Detention Services, captain of the San Marcos Station, and the George Bailey Detention Facility.  He held the ranks of lieutenant, sergeant, and deputy and worked in a wide variety of assignments. Undersheriff Zuniga’s has been involved in the following committees and programs of the California Board of Corrections (BOC): Executive Steering Committee, Adult Standards Review and Revision Process (June 2003), Executive Steering Committee, Impact of Budget Reductions on the Standard and Training for Corrections (STC) Program (June 2003), Executive Steering Committee, Juvenile Standards and Review and Revision Process (June 2002), and the Education Workgroup, Institutions Operational Quality Assurance Project for the California Youth Authority. Zuniga and his wife, Eileen reside in Bonita, California.  He was raised in San Ysidro, attended Mar Vista High School and earned Associate of Arts degree in History from Southwestern College in 1974.  Zuniga attended the University of San Diego prior to earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management from the University of Redlands in 1988, and is a graduate of the 189th Session of the FBI National Academy. Undersheriff Zuniga is a member of the California State Sheriffs’ Association (CSSA), National Institute of Corrections, Large Jail Network, American Jail Association, American Correctional Association, Southern California Jail Managers Association, and he holds a California Community College Limited Lifetime Teaching Credential.

November 7, 2005—Susan Plese, "San Diego Chargers and Sheriff's Department to Shoot Public Service Announcements to Empower Children Against Abduction,Abuse & Exploitation," sheriff's department news release: The San Diego Chargers, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department and the AmberWatch Foundation are teaming up to take a stand against child abduction and molestation by shooting content for 24 30-second public service announcements based on the AmberWatch Foundation’s “Be Safe!” curriculum.  The PSA’s will feature Drew Brees, LaDainian Tomlinson, Lorenzo Neal and Luis Castillo of the Chargers along with San Diego Sheriff Bill Kolender.  The tips will help parents and children learn simple safety measures and solutions to minimize the chance of abduction and molestation.  The spots will feature 12 “Be Safe!” Tips for parents and children in English and Spanish, and will be broadcast all over San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles in 2006.  Cast and crew available for comment from 12:30 to 1:00. December 19, 2005—Susan Plese, "Sheriff Kolender Promotes Ten," Sheriff's department news release:  Sheriff Kolender will promote ten members of the department (nine sworn and one professional staff) at a 10 a.m. ceremony on December 20, 2005.  The ceremony will be held at the San Diego Mission Valley Hilton, 901 Camino Del Rio South. Bill Gore will be appointed to the position of undersheriff, which was recently held by Barry Zuniga who retired last week. Earl Wentworth will be appointed to the rank of Assistant Sheriff to fill the vacancy left by Gore. In addition, promotions will be made to the positions of commander, captain, lieutenant and sergeant. One member of the professional staff will be promoted as well.
