Gala, Heart & Soul.will be held on Saturday, April 1, at the La Jolla Torrey
Pines Hilton. This year's theme, "Love Lessons," celebrates the
accomplishments of the 2006 JFS Mitzvah Awards Honorees: Linda Janon, Hamilton
Loeb Jr, and Jan Tuttleman. These three individuals have shown vision,
dedication and leadership to seeing unmet needs fulfilled. The Heart & Soul
Gala begins with a cocktail reception and a silent auction followed by dinner,
award ceremony and entertainment. Linda Janon organized a small group of
volunteers, which became the Mental Health Committee of JFS. From its inception
the committee's primary focus was developing a Jewish sponsored residential
facility for adults with mental illness. This past spring, JFS closed escrow on
a 20-unit garden apartment complex, set to open as Hope Village in 2006. The
facility, the first in Califonria, will provide a safe independent home for
adults with mental illness and peace of mind for their familes. From
delivering hot kosher meals to homebound seniors to chairing the JFS Senior
Services Committee for the last 10 years, Hamilton Loeb Jr. is dedicated to San
Diego's seniors in need. As chair of the Senior Services committee he has
spearheaded the expansion of JFS regional senior centers to four, instituted a
senior transportation program called "Rides and Smiles," and helped
develop a nutrition program that currently prepares meals for over 250 seniors
each day. One of the accomplishments he feels most proud of is helping to
develop the Senior Services Planning Committee, under the coordination of the
UJF. Formed in 2001, the committee brings together all the San Diego Jewish
agencies that provide services to seniors, to share information and carry out
community planning. Motivated by the needs of Jewish women and girls in
the community, Jan Tuttleman became the founding chair of the Jewish Women's
Foundation of San Diego. "We are a creative, diverse group of women—of
all ages, backgrounds and interests—united by the strength of our commitment
to Jewish women and girls in need," said Tuttleman. Currently 45
women strong, JWV's first program was given to JFS to operate—Supporting
Jewish Single Parents (SJSP). This new program is dedicated to connecting Jewish
single parents and their children to programs within the Jewish community, by
referrals, networking, support groups and advocacy. For information, call Susan
Lapidus, director of development at JFS, at (619) 291-0473.
