Washington, DC (special) -- In the waning days of the last Congress,
the Senate gave final passage to the Indian Lands Transfer Act awarding
a total of 3,500 acres of federal land to eight California Indian tribes,
provided they be used for purposes other than gambling.
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) said four of the beneficiaries are bands
of Mission Indians, whose reservations are located in San Diego County:
Pala, Cuyapaipe, Manzanita and Capitan. In the case of the Capitan, the
award was made specifically to the Barona group of that Indian Band.
Boxer said the other beneficiaries are the Pit River Tribe and Fort
Bidwell Indian Community, both of Modoc County; the Morongo Band of Mission
Indians in Riverside County and the Fort Independence Community of Paiute
Indians in Inyo County. -- Donald
