Washington (special) --Rep. Tom Lantos (D-San Mateo, CA) has welcomed
the conviction in a Lithuanian court of Kazys Gimzauskas on a charge of
collaborating with the nazis in genocide.
"This murderer who conspired with the nazis while serving in the Vilnius
security police to slaughter innocent victims during the Holocaust
has
finally been brought to justice," said Lantos, a Holocaust survivor
who is
today ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee.
"With today's conviction, another chapter in the sad history of the
Holocaust has been closed. I hope it provides some solace to the families
who lost loved ones at the hands of this evil man."
Lantos addressed the Lithuanian Parliament last year and appealed for
legislation to permit prosecution of nazi war criminals. Gimzauskas'
conviction was the first such prosecution since Lithuania became
independent of the Soviet Union in 1991. -- Donald
