Because of our dispersion following the destruction of
the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE, we Jews have
lived in almost every place in the world at one time or
another. We built such institutions as synagogues,
mikvahs, schools, and cemeteries for our communal needs,
while contributing to the development of our host
communities. Our customs influenced those of the
countries in which we lived, and in turn were influenced
by theirs.
Do you like to see Jewish places when you go on
trips? Do you enjoy learning about how Jews fared in
different places around the world?
Navigate to any city or country on our website and learn
about its Jewish sites, history and people.
In this growing website, we will try to identify the “Jewish
threads” in the tapestry of every city and country
where Jews have lived. This is a monumental, near
encyclopaedic task, which probably would have been
impossible prior to the time of the internet. But, now,
working cooperatively, we have many resources to draw
upon. Among them are the works of journalists, kindly
shared with us. Publicity releases from Jewish
institutions. Weblinks to Jewish places. And, most
important of all, YOU.
Are there places of special Jewish interest in your
community or places that you have visited? Describe them
to us in the accompanying e-mail form and have your
material considered for posting on this growing FREE
resource for travelers interested in our unique history
and contributions.
