sketch of Joan Dean: Joan Dean served in the administration of California
Governor Gray Davis at the California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency from
March 1999 until December 2003 as Acting Undersecretary, Deputy Secretary and as
San Diego Regional Director. She was also an Ex-Officio member of the California
Coastal Commission and a member of the Employment Training Panel. She is
currently working as a public affairs and fundraising consultant in New York and
California. Dean has enjoyed a most varied and exciting career in government,
politics and public relations. She served as U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein's
Deputy State Director in San Diego, and worked for Lieutenant Governor Leo
McCarthy, assisting him with his field operations and with economic development
projects. Dean held several administrative posts in New York State government at
the State Consumer Protection Board and the Department of Civil Service. She
also heads her own political consulting and fundraising firm in San Diego and in
New York; her clients include California Governor Gray Davis, Assemblyman Howard
Wayne, Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, Congresswoman Jane
Harman, New York Attorney General Candidate Karen Burstein and Steven Spielberg
for his Survivors of the Shoah project. Dean holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and
a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the State University of New York
at Albany. She served as President of the San Diego Chapter of the American
Jewish Committee and also holds memberships in several community organizations.
She is mother of two daughters, Dr. Lisa Cohen, a physician in Boston, and Amy
Cohen, a social worker in New York, and also has five grandchildren.
