The Most Thankful—Over 60 "New Americans"—the people who
have the most right to celebrate Thanksgiving this year—joined with the San
Diego Section of the Council of Jewish Women and the Emigre Committee of the
United Jewish fun in celebrating Thanksgiving with a fine dinner prepared under
the direction of Mrs. Harris Rubel. These "Delayed Pilgrims"
demonstrated their eagerness to become good Americans and fine citizens by the
speed in which a book "Road to Citizenship—U.S.A." was snapped up
when offered to them for study. They listened very closely to the wise words and
the wisdom of Judge Jacob Weinberger who told them the meaning of Thanksgiving.
They followed Dr. Walter Ornstein, chairman of the committee, very closely when
he spoke in German about the reason for the celebration.
Barkley Aftermath —The aftermath of the {U.S. Vice
President Alben} Barkley visit to the Jewish Community of San Diego came as a
beautiful cake was delivered to him at his 2nd Wedding Anniversary celebrated in
Coronado. The cake was the gift of Bohemian Rye Bakery in the name of the entire
Jewish community. You may not know this, and it may be a trade secret, but when
the occasion warrants, such as Thanksgiving celebration for New Americans,
{return of Abe & Ida} Nasatir reception, Bohemian Rye has offered to make a
cake as their participation in the program.
Freedom of the Press—Most of us are not taking sides either way, but it
seems rather peculiar to many people in San Diego that when Paul Blanshard,
author of such books as "Catholic Power and Democracy" speaks before a
crowd of 3300 people it ought to be news. Those who were interested could find
not one word published in any major publication in San Diego. That includes the
Union, Tribune and Point Magazine. Isn't his talk before 3200 people newsworthy?
AZA Convention—District No. 4, A.Z.A., of which Harry Wax is one of the key figures, will be holding its annual convention at the Del Mar Hotel on December 26-29. If you want to see real democracy at work and a fine Youth Organization, I suggest you take in one or more of their meetings. The boys run the show themselves and do, in many cases, a far better and more understandable job than their fathers in the senior lodges.
Community Center—You may be interested to know that the Community Center almost bought a building last week. However, in checking through it found it to be out of line with the actual worth of the building. They're still looking and its hoped that some deal may be made right after the first of the year. Seattle, Washington, is reviving their Community Center attempt. Norfolk, Virginia, has just raised $53,000 at a first meeting for its Community Center building. This movement is going on all over the country.
