United Nations, NY (special) --Bonnie Lipton, national president of
Hadassah, announced success Jan. 16 in winning recognition for the women's
Zionist group by the United Nations Economic and Social Council's Committee
on Non-Governmental Organizations.
A determined effort by the United States Ambassador Richard Holbrooke,
U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee, and Rep. Nita Lowey, ranking member of the House Foreign Operations
Appropriations Committee, helped to overcome opposition from some Arab
states, whose representatives revived the "Zionism equals racism" canard.
