Washington D.C. (special) -- Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) reported
previously as leaning against confirmation for former Sen.. John Aschroft
as attorney general, has now announced herself in firm opposition.
Gloria Steinem, in her capacity as president of Voters for Choice, hopes to persuade other senators to join Boxer. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa) says unless the confirmation hearings turn up some surprise, he will vote for his former Republican colleague. Meanwhile, Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, has announced an ad campaign will be mounted in Ashcroft's behalf. Ira Forman, executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Coalition, announced opposition to Ashcroft, saying the attorney general designate favors removing the constitutional wall dividing church and state. - Donald H.
