TASTY MORSELS

Taking care of others by taking care of myself

SAN DIEGO—Dear Reader, Before reading this column, take a look at the accompanying picture to the right.. Now look closer. That’s me! There I am actually relaxing in an onsen. (This could be you, so read on to find out how.) When I first got a glimpse of this digital foreigner in soft repose, I sat back, smiled, then gave myself a HUGE pat-on-the-back for taking advice from Talmud, which, for me, meant taking a day off from work to care for myself… so I would be better able to care for others.

In the Talmud, a story is told of a man and his son who both lost an item. The rabbi encourages the son to find his own belonging before helping his father search for his. Is this selfish? They contend that it is a priority for us to take care of our personal needs so we are better equipped to offer help to others with theirs. So, when Lesley Barnes, VP of Operations at Numero Water Boutique, called to offer me a tour of the newest storefront in burgeoning Little Italy, I remembered this lesson I had recently learned and took the day off to rejuvenate at this 4,000 sq. ft. Zen-like, environmentally conscious, quasi spa, water and tea tasting bar and tearoom, and boutique that offers gifts and accessories from Japan as well as beauty and skin care products. (Have you ever tried Emu Oil to prevent scarring?)

The rabbis were right. “One must take care of oneself – much more often,” I muttered mantra-like to myself while being pampered in an onsen (Japanese word for hot spring) or mineral foot bath after indulging in a reflexology foot massage. Services like these are offered at Numero Water Boutique in a tranquil, private relaxation room any Tuesday – Sunday from 11:00a to 7:00p.

But Numero Water Boutique is really about the water. It comes from three separate sources in the foothills of Mt. Fuji Japan, a region located on the Izu Peninsula and recognized as one of the greatest resources in the world. Three premium natural spring waters: Numero 29, Numero 51, and Numero 76 are sourced for their unique mineral content and consequently, for their health benefits, such as hydration, digestion, and healthy skin, to name a few. Wouldn’t the rabbis be pleased to know that you’re taking time to nourish yourself with a product that has taken hundreds of years to filter?

Visit www.numerowater.com to learn more about this revolutionary water boutique or call 619.236.8369 to make an appointment for a special spa treatment. Or just wander in and check out the amenities at 1660 India Street in Little Italy. You’ll be better for others if you do…B’Tayavon!
