Jewish BIGPals seeks mentors;
sets Sept. 10 program

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—Jewish BIGPals, a program of Jewish Family Service of San Diego, matches Jewish adults with Jewish children, ages six to sixteen, from single parent families. There are more than 4,600 Jewish single parent families in San Diego. Many of these children, most of whom have been through a divorce, death or abandonment, need a positive influence in their life. Volunteer to be the positive role model they need, by listening, encouraging, motivating and being their friend.

Jewish BIGPals urgently needs volunteers in the North County area, especially male volunteers. Interested volunteers are invited to attend an Information Night on Thursday, September 10, 2009 from 6:00-7:30pm at the Jewish Family Service - Turk Family Center (8804 Balboa Ave., San Diego, 92123).

A Big Pal is a mentor and a confidant who helps a child by forming a lasting, supportive relationship on the journey to adulthood. Studies show children who have gone through the BIGPals program are more likely to succeed in school and have better relationships with their families. Big Pals are Jewish adults age 19 and older, who want to have a positive impact in the life of a child. Big Pals meet with their Little Pals twice a month for three to six hours. Activities have included enjoying sporting events, going to the park, and volunteering at a local animal shelter. Jewish BIGPals also plans quarterly activities for all Big and Little Pals to come together.

For more information or to volunteer, contact (858) 637-3090 or visit www.jfssd.org.

Insurance Commissioner Poizner announces fraud charges against Nurse Connection owner

LOS ANGELES (Press Release)—Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced that Joseph Baiden, 56, of Diamond Bar, surrendered Tuesday to the Los Angeles Superior Court pursuant to an arrest warrant issued for eight counts of workers’ compensation insurance premium fraud against State Fund. Baiden is being held on $1.64 million bail.

“It appears that Baiden was living a lavish lifestyle due to ill-gotten gains,” said Commissioner Poizner. “But through the work of our investigation and the efforts of our partners, the walls supporting his fraudulent schemes have come crashing down on him.”

The arrest came as the result of an investigation by the California Department of Insurance (CDI). Along with the arrest, CDI froze Baiden’s bank accounts and seized numerous properties (listed at bottom) throughout the Los Angeles area estimated at $4 million. His primary residence was located in an exclusive, gated hilltop neighborhood in Diamond Bar.

The case is being prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Each count is a felony and, if convicted on all counts, Baiden faces a maximum of 40 years in prison as well as $3.2 million in fines.

In September 2008, CDI received a referral from State Fund alleging that Baiden, doing business as Nurse Connection, Inc., was underreporting his workers’ compensation payroll on the quarterly payroll reports. According to the referral, State Fund received an anonymous tip that Baiden had falsified payroll records as well as California and federal tax filings for the years 2001-07. It is alleged that Baiden misrepresented $20 million in Nurse Connection’s payroll to conceal the actual risk to the insurance carrier, thereby illegally reducing his workers’ compensation insurance premiums. State Fund’s estimated loss over this seven-year period is approximately $1.4 million.
