Thursdays with the songs of Hal Wingard, z"l

SAN DIEGO—How fleeing a relationship can be! That is the theme of these three songs, selected by Hal's daughter, Harriet. To hear Hal sing them, click on the title above the lyrics. To hear other Wingard songs, click here.

#131 -- Passion
#132 -- Forever and a Day
#154 -- Heartbreak

#131, Passion

The day we met our passion flared,
Engulfing us in fire.
We felt no love but took no time
To wait our hot desire.
We gave ourselves without a thought
Of what could be consumed.
In ecstasy we could not know
That such affairs are doomed.

The flame of passion dies away
Without the fuel of love.

When passion waned, as passion must,
We felt a shiv'ring cold,
With nothing left to take the place
Of passion uncontrolled.
And so we parted icily
When suddenly we knew:
Nothing's left when there's no love
And ecstasy is through.

The flame of passion dies away
Without the fuel of love.

#132, Forever And A Day

We vowed to love forever,
Forever and a day.
Because we felt so deeply,
We knew our love would stay.
In front of friends and family
We took our lovers' oath.
We swore we'd love forever,
With words that touched us both.

We knew our love would stay
Forever and a day.

But shortly we discovered
That honeymoons are brief.
Loving's part of living,
But living brings its grief.
As tiny irks and angers
Led to constant strife,
We felt ourselves divided,
Unhappy with our life.
