Honoree
Michael "Mickey" Newman
Honored by Sy and Resa Brenner, El Cajon, California, August 22, 2005
"Mickey Newman worked for Metropolitan Life in Detroit and was their
youngest and most productive salesman. He received offers from other major insurance companies to
become a general manager. In 1972, he chose Sun Life of Canada to open an office
in San Diego, California. He was
with them for nine years when he decided to go into business for himself and he
became a building contractor under
the fitting name of Pride Builders. In
1979, he also became the president of Beth Tefilah Synagogue, where he served on
the board for many years. People liked Mickey because he was funny, and because
he was the most loyal of friends. He
and his friend Jerry Friedman used to go to Beth Tefilah’s ‘bagel and lox’
club on Sunday mornings, and afterwards take the boys across the street to the
Muir Elementary School field to play softball. Jerry had a rival construction
business, but after he developed Parkinson’s disease, he and Mickey more or
less merged their businesses. Until Jerry’s death, Mickey took him to minyan
and to all his appointments—even after Jerry moved to North County.
Mickey was the one who oversaw the expansion at DZ Akins Restaurant, and
he and all his cronies liked to sit at the same booth, "Deli-3," every morning. The Akins
family so admired him they hung his picture to the right of the front door."—Sy
