September 9, 2005—Tribute from Elaine Rosenblat,
Waterfor, Michigan:
Mickey Newman was my dearest cousin and
Seymour
Brenner is my dearest uncle. They are related and they both have
given joy and love and support and loyalty and kindness to so very many
people. They are both truly special and go more than the extra mile.
I will always think of them with pride and love and I agree that these two men
are both worthy of your award.
September 10, 2005--Tribute from Mo Bailey, San
Diego, California:
I am writing to add to the material about my cousin, Mickey Newman.
When
my son, Dylan was very young and tested his limits with a minor preschool
infraction I asked him to think about what kind of person he would like to be.
His answer, "I want to be like Mickey!" Ironically, (approx. 4 years
later) in preparation for Valentine's Day in 1999, I took advantage of the
Internet and
e-mailed
important people in my son's life and told them that I was putting a Valentine
anthology together for Dylan. I asked them to write a sentiment for the
book. The following is a portion of what Mickey wrote to Dylan: "What I believe makes you
such a special person is the way in which you look at others in a non-critical
way. You accept people as they are, and in spite of their faults, are willing
to be their friend." My point: Dylan made a decision
to be like Mickey. Mickey's words to Dylan describe the type of person Mickey
was and still is in the hearts of those blessed to have known him.
Mickey
Newman unconditionally tapped into the heart of so many. He is an example of a
pay-it-forward type of guy who received his joy in being a true mensch.
Mickey is still here with us in spirit and positive daily life decisions. He
is one of those rare human beings whose life pattern will continue to make us
better people because of the example he left on our hearts, our minds and most
importantly, our actions.
September
12, 2005—Tribute from Stephanie Newman, Farmington Hills,
Michigan—Mickey Newman was my father, and to my 9 1/2 year-old daughter, he
was,"Pa-Pa." My father was my daughter's best friend, and a
steadfast friend to countless people, especially to my uncle, Seymour Brenner.
To my late dearest grandfather, Abe Corman, he was not only a son-in-law, but
his son. My father's smile lit up a room, and he was universally well-loved.
When my father was taken from me, not only did I lose a parent, I lost part of
myself. My father's advice was treasured, his jokes hilarious, and the love
and support he gave to my daughter and I, priceless. I recall words from the
song, "Abraham, Martin, and John," by Dion, "... it seems the
good die young. I just looked around, and he's gone."
Never did I think those words would apply to my father; I thought
he'd be with us for many years to come. My father was a kind and decent man
with the biggest heart. The community far beyond San Diego lost a pillar of
strength and charity. For, my family from Detroit, to Europe, to Israel
lost its best friend and the cornerstone of our little family. Thank you so
much for remembering my father who did so much for so many, and asked for
nothing in return. May G-d bless my father's dear soul.
