Leanne, who had been Garas’ companion for 16 years before they decided to get married in the face of his terminal disease, said a memorial service for Garas will be held in Canberra in the near future.
Garas was a distant cousin of Nancy Harrison, co-publisher of San Diego Jewish World. Garas made contact with her through his genealogical research. Although they never met personally, they did have the opportunity to see each other face-to-face via Skype. Nancy’s husband, Don, the editor of San Diego Jewish World, had the pleasure of many invigorating email conversations with the always joking Garas.
