LETTER FROM JERUSALEM

Worrying about Obama's Mideast advisors

By Ira Sharkansky

JERUSALEM—Israel's status as the Promised Land, and a central site in the history of Christianity and Judaism has helped this little country a great deal.

It has also caused some problems.

Israelis welcome support. We are less united in our view of foreign politicians with messianic visions about a future we should embrace.

Bringing peace to the Promised Land is an admirable goal. By now it should be obvious, however, that politics and religion do not mix well. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and the road to peace in the Holy Land must traverse a Via Dolorosa.

The Muslims also have a stake here. It may not be as central to their history as in the case of Judaism and Christianity, but it is close. What the Jews call the Temple Mount is to them the Noble Sanctuary, which has moved up to be a point of no compromise since Israel became a thorn in their side.

Israeli news is featuring a report by Gregory Craig, said to be Obama's National Security Advisor, that his candidate will turn immediate attention to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, and not let it rest without personal presidential attention. Along with this is a report that Senator John Kerry, said to be a candidate for Obama's Secretary of State, is concerned that the Bush administration has squandered the country's standing among Muslims. He proclaimed that he and Obama are staunch friends of Israel, and that an Obama administration must repair America's standing among Muslims..

Those are good reasons for applause from the Israeli left. Those of us who deserve the labels of skeptics or cynics may be wondering how much of a problem is John McCain's age.

It has long been said that the support for Palestinians expressed by leaders of Arab countries is, in large part, a way to distract their people from the problems at home. It is easier to rant about Israel than to deal with corruption and poverty in one's own country.

At least some American enthusiasm for the Middle East may reflect a similar process. It is easier to garner attention by dealing with distant problems than with the knotty issues of health care, environment, and economic security among all those interests at home.

The difficulties begin when American politicians and their aides travel far with home-spun images of good and bad, and overlook complexities of a kind that they could not avoid at home.

Now let us hear from all those Jewish Americans who have been loyal Democrats since 1932:

  • Obama is brilliant and flexible. And a good friend of Israel. All will be well.

  • Gregory Craig was speaking for Gregory Craig, not for Barak Obama.

  • Obama is smart enough not to appoint John Kerry as Secretary of State.

  • It is in Israel's interest to be more flexible, to heed its friends in the Obama White House, and to make the concessions necessary to achieve peace with the Palestinians and Arab countries.

Gregory Craig and John Kerry are not the first individuals who have looked at us with messianic visions. So far we have managed to resist, and to survive.

John McCain is only a bit older than me, and I think of myself as a young man.

Biden wrong on Iran, inconsistent on Israel

{Editor's note: San Diego Jewish World welcomes guest columns and commentary on the presidential election as it concerns issues of direct concern to the Jewish community.}

By Matthew Brooks

WASHINGTON, D.C. — With the selection of Sen. Joe Biden as Sen. Obama's vice presidential running mate, the Democrats' ticket has now become an even greater gamble for the Jewish community. Throughout his career, Sen. Biden has consistently been wrong on Iran and his voting record on Israel has been inconsistent. Like Obama, Biden fundamentally misunderstands the threat posed by an Iran determined to obtain nuclear weapons. Biden has continuously demonstrated poor judgment on Iran. He has voted against significant legislation that would pressure Iran to stop pursuing nuclear weapons. Biden has failed to recognize the serious threat that Iran poses to Israel and the U.S. and its allies in the Middle East.

Biden Votes Wrong on Iran:
November 2007, Kyl-Lieberman Resolution, 76-22: Like Obama, Biden was one of the few senators to oppose the bipartisan 2007 Kyl-Lieberman Amendment labeling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization.  Democratic senators supporting the bipartisan resolution: Sen. Clinton (D-NY), Sen. Reid (D-NV), Sen. Durbin (D-IL), and Sen. Levin (D-MI).

June 2004, Letter Urging the President to Highlight Iran's Nuclear Program at the G-8 Summit, 66 Signers:  Biden did not sign this important letter which had 66 co-signers.

May 1998, Iran Missile Proliferation Sanctions Act, 90-4: In 1998, Biden was one of only four senators to vote against the Iran Missile Proliferation Sanctions Act, a bill that punished foreign companies or other entities that sent Iran sensitive missile technology or expertise.

Biden's Inconsistent Record on Israel:
June 2008, Landrieu/Collins Letter to President Bush Supporting Israel's Quest for Peace; Biden did not sign this pro-Israel letter that had 77 signers.

December 2005, Talent/Nelson Letter Urging President Bush to Press Palestinian Leadership to Bar Terrorist Groups from Participating in Palestinian Legislative Elections; Biden did not sign this letter barring terror groups from participating in Palestinian elections.  The letter had 73 co-signers.

March 2004, Schumer-Hatch-Clinton-Smith Letter Urging Kofi Annan to Reverse Support for ICJ Hearings on the Security Fence; Biden did not sign this letter urging Kofi Annan to reverse support for the International Court of Justice Hearings on the Security Fence.  The letter had 79 signers.

November 2001, Bond/Schumer Letter Urging President Not to Meet with Arafat until the Violence Ends, 89 Signers: Biden did not sign this letter urging President Bush not to meet with Arafat until Palestinian violence ceased.  The letter had 89 signers.

March 1998, Mack/Lieberman Letter Urging the Clinton Administration Not to Pressure Israel; Biden did not sign this pro-Israel letter that had 77 signers.

May 1993, Kennedy/Grassley Letter Urging President to Press Syria let Syrian Jews Leave. In 1993, Sen. Biden refused to sign this letter calling on Syria to allow Syrian Jews to leave Syria. Ultimately, 73 signers approved.

Joe Biden Threatens to Cut Off US Aid to Israel in 1982
(Commentary Magazine, Aug. 26, 2008 citing the Jerusalem Post, March 13, 1992)

"In a conversation with Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, after a sharp confrontation in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the subject of the settlements, Begin defined himself as 'a proud Jew who does not tremble with fear' when speaking with foreign statesmen.   During that committee hearing, at the height of the Lebanon War, Sen. John Biden (Delaware) had attacked Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria and threatened that if Israel did not immediately cease this activity, the US would have to cut economic aid to Israel.  When the senator raised his voice and banged twice on the table with his fist, Begin commented to him: 'This desk is designed for writing, not for fists.  Don't threaten us with slashing aid.  Do you think that because the US lends us money it is entitled to impose on us what we  must do?  We are grateful for the assistance we have received, but we are not to be threatened.  I am a proud Jew.  Three thousand years of culture are behind me, and you will not frighten me with threats. Take note: we do not want a single soldier of yours to die for us.' After the meeting, Sen. Moynihan approached Begin and praised him for his cutting reply.  To which Begin answered with thanks, defining his stand against threats.

Joe Biden on John McCain and Barack Obama
(From National Review Online, Jim Geraghty, August 20, 2008)

Biden, on a post-debate appearance on MSNBC, October 30, 2007: "The only guy on the other side who's qualified is John McCain."

Biden appearing on The Daily Show, August 2, 2005: "John McCain is a personal friend, a great friend, and I would be honored to run with or against John McCain, because I think the country would be better off, be
well off no matter who..."

Assessing Obama's Iraq plan on September 13, 2007: "My impression is [Obama] thinks that if we leave, somehow the Iraqis are going to have an epiphany"of peaceful coexistence among warring sects. "I've seen zero evidence of that."

Also from that Observer interview: "But - and the 'but' was clearly inevitable - he doubts whether American voters are going to elect 'a one-term, a guy who has served for four years in the Senate,' and added: 'I
don't recall hearing a word from Barack about a plan or a tactic.'"

Around that time, Biden in an interview with the Huffington Post, he assessed Obama and Hillary Clinton: "The more people learn about them (Obama and Hillary) and how they handle the pressure, the more their support will evaporate."

THE JEWISH GROTTO

Choose your student's backpack carefully

By Gary Rotto

SAN DIEGO—By now, virtually of the area schools, both public and private, are back in session.  Parents and kids finished back-to-school shopping for clothes, school supplies and lunch boxes.  But one of the most important decisions is how to take the many textbooks to and from school.

How a child carries his or her books around campus and to home is so important due to the weight and the pressure on young muscles and bones.  Bodies are still developing and the weigh can have an adverse affect.  Dr. Katherine Francis, medical director of Neighborhood Healthcare in El Cajon, talked about the importance of weight distribution and the selection of a good book-carrying device on Fox 5 news Wednesday morning.  My daughter, a student at San Diego Jewish Academy, was fortunate to be a case study for Dr. Francis.

We took the many backpacks – with wheels, standard over the shoulder without wheels, a large bag for carrying her soccer ball and cleats as well as a standard bag to the studios for evaluation on Fox in the Morning.  Arthel Neville, the co-anchor of the new local Fox news program, interviewed Dr. Francis.  The evaluation by the good doctor was mainly good, but Kelila’s favorite bag did not pass the test.  Dr. Francis made the following points:

Select a carrier that fits over both shoulders.  This more evenly distributes the load along the back.

The backpack should not rise above the shoulders and should reach about four inches above the hips.

Select a backpack with a waist strap and use the strap for stability.

The heavier books should be towards the back of the pack, flat on the back.  Lighter books should be farthest away from the back.  Again, this promotes good weight distribution.

Be careful about swinging the bag when putting it on – you don’t want to hit any body or anything – (especially in the house!)

Wheeled backpacks are an excellent choice as they keep the load off of young developing backs.

This year, my daughter is in the sixth grade, which means that she has a locker at school.  Dr. Francis said that this is the best of all situations as long as my daughter uses the locker to store her books.  Carrying the minimal weight to and from class is best for a healthy back and skeletal development.

With these key pieces of advice, hopefully the children’s backaches will be at a minimum.  And they can spend more time on the playground or the ball field than in the nurse’s office.

GUEST COLUMN

The 'Leviticus Traps'

By David Benkof

NEW YORK—When Orthodox Jews like me discuss our ideas about man-woman marriage and other public-policy issues relating to homosexuality, we often run into what I call "Leviticus traps." Such quasi-arguments suggest that people who follow the Bible are singling out homosexuality for condemnation out of prejudice or narrow-mindedness - because if we really valued Scripture we'd also follow all the other "silly rules" in the Torah.

Perhaps the most famous Leviticus trap was set several years ago by President Josiah Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen on the former NBC television series The West Wing. A character ("Dr. Jenna Jacobs") modeled after radio advice-giver Dr. Laura Schlessinger (an Orthodox Jew at the time) visited the White House and the president confronted her:

Bartlet: I like your show. I like how you call homosexuality an abomination.

Jacobs: I don't say homosexuality is an abomination, Mr. President, the Bible does.

Bartlet: Yes, it does. Leviticus.

Jacobs: 18:22.

Bartlet: Chapter and verse. I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I had you here. I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My chief of staff, Leo McGarry, insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or is it OK to call the police? ... Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you?

This confrontation, which is based on a Leviticus trap in an open letter to Dr. Laura that circulated on the Internet eight years ago, sent gay and lesbian opponents of traditional religion into a tizzy of righteousness and self-congratulation. The problem is, the scene shows zero awareness of the beliefs and practices of Orthodox Jews like me, Dr. Laura at the time, and presumably Dr. Jacobs (a Jewish name).

Because Orthodox Jews believe not only that the written Torah is divine, but that God gave an oral Torah as well, which has come to be written down in rabbinic literature such as the Talmud and the Midrash. Orthodox Jews believe male-male intercourse is forbidden to everyone not because we open the Torah, read a verse from Leviticus, and reason out its meaning. Rather, we listen to our rabbis who are experts at the entire Jewish legal corpus, which explains how we should understand the written Torah. All serious Orthodox rabbis agree that male-male intercourse - and same-sex marriage - are universally prohibited.

Bartlet's diatribe dramatizes a made-up death penalty (it's mentioned nowhere in the Torah) for mixing two threads together. Of course, Orthodox Jews indeed do not wear garments with both linen and wool - I had to get my new suit approved by a rabbi before I could buy it - but doing so has never been a capital crime. The Biblical prohibitions that do carry the death penalty demanded such a high burden of proof that executions for the violation of Jewish law were rare. I know of no specific case where a Jewish court executed someone for gay sex, for example. Punishments, in Jewish thought, are meant as atonement, not vengeance. Today's traditional Jews look at each violation's corresponding punishment as a measurement of the severity of the sin, not a practical plan for disciplining offenders.

In addition, many of the examples Bartlet gave - such as mixing fabrics and observing the Sabbath - are laws that apply only to Jews. In fact, we believe non-Jews are forbidden to fully observe the Sabbath. So Dr. Jacobs' special condemnation of gay sex actually does make sense, because the prohibition of intercourse between males (and, incidentally, of same-sex marriage) are "Noahide" laws that apply to all human beings. In other words, one answer to "Why don't you lecture your radio listeners about violating the Sabbath and wearing mixed fabrics rather than just homosexuality?" is "Judaism believes only the prohibition of the latter applies to everyone - and most of my listeners aren't Jewish."

The people who set Leviticus traps for Orthodox Jews display a basic ignorance of Orthodoxy. It's time to have some honest dialogue on marriage and other gay issues, but nobody's beliefs should be misrepresented or mocked.

Jerusalem Post. He can be reached at DavidBenkof@aol.com.

Thursdays with the Songs of Hal Wingard

Editor's Note: We continue our presentation of the songs of Hal Wingard, moving this week to miscellaneous subjects. Here is a link to an index of Wingard's songs published by San Diego Jewish World. To hear Hal performing the song, click on its title.

#217, Silent He And A Silent She

A gentleman and lady
     In crowded lunch cafe
Sit facing one another
     With nothing much to say.

Their silence forms an island
     Within the noisy crowd,
Where any conversation
     Is lost unless it's loud.

She fumbles through her handbag
     While he stares into space,
With neither one once looking
     The other in the face.

     A silent he
     And a silent she.
     A silent he
     And a silent she.

One cannot help but wonder
What makes these two a pair.
Not talking while at table
     Is really rather rare.

Perhaps they've lost their voices
And find the noise so loud
They haven't got the power
     To shout above the crowd.

Or maybe they're just angry,
     Content to sit and pout,
With neither even trying
     To work the problem out.

     Chorus

Perhaps they're simply strangers
     On midday shopping spree,
Just forced to share a table,
     The only one was free.

And now they sit unspeaking,
     Aware how happenstance
Could lead two total strangers
     To start a hot romance.

Romance could lead to marriage,
     For that's the normal course,
And marriage lead to silence,
     And silence to divorce.

Chorus

A gentleman and lady
     In crowded lunch cafe
Sit facing one another
     With nothing much to say.

     A silent he
     And a silent she.

(c) 2008 Hal Wingard; completed January 12, 1992. Words begun January 10, 1992, while observing an elderly Asian couple at table in the downstairs cafe of the San Francisco Center, and completed the next day while waiting for an evening flight from San Francisco to San Diego.

#200, Two Elderly Ladies

Two elderly ladies are crossing the street,
Their bodies bent over, their eyes on their feet.
They shuffle in silence with arm linked in arm,
Hoping the linkage will keep them from harm.

     Oh, oh, oh, oh.

Two elderly drivers with foot on the brake
Sit patiently waiting the time it will take
For elderly ladies with arm linked in arm
To help one another and keep each from harm.

     Oh, oh, oh, oh.

From other direction, in souped up Corvette,
A youngster comes driving while changing cassette--
His eyes on the tape deck, not looking ahead,
Where elderly ladies are surely to tread.

     Oh, oh, oh, oh.

Two elderly ladies were crossing the street,
Their bodies bent over, their eyes on their feet.
They shuffled in silence with arm linked in arm,
Hoping the linkage would keep them from harm.

     Oh, oh, oh, oh.

(c) 2008 Hal Wingard. Concept developed after observing two elderly ladies crossing Geary Street in San Francisco. Words written March 4, 1990 on USAir flight from SAN to LAX, before driving to Bakersfield, where words formed partnership with music.

#2, The Emperor's New Clothes

The emp'ror walks so proudly,
Head high in regal pose.
     The crowd that's there
     Can't help but stare
At the emperor's new clothes.

Rare cloth he's proud of wearing,
From shoulders to his toes.
     The crowd that's there
     Can't help but stare
At the emperor's new clothes.

Two crafty, clever tailors
Their secret won't disclose.
     The crowd that's there
     Can't help but stare
At the emperor's new clothes.

For the cloth that they have woven
Is a cloth that never shows.
     The crowd that's there
     Can't help but stare
At the emperor's new clothes.

And no one dares to tell him;
But a child who sees and knows
     Shouts, "Mama, mama,
     Look at that!
The emp'ror wears no clothes!"

The emp'ror walks so proudly,
Head high in regal pose.
     The crowd that's there
     Can't help but stare
At the emperor's new clothes.

Sisterhood Invites All to ‘Come to the Fair’
From Southwestern Jewish Press, December 16, 1949, page 26

Anticipating a capacity attendance, the Temple Beth Israel Sisterhood is hard at work to complete plans for their super fund raising affair of the year, the County Fair, to be held Sunday December 18th in the Imig Manor Hotel, Mississippi Street and El Cajon Blvd.

Mrs. Carl Esenoff, chairman of this event and the first vice president of the Sisterhood, announced that features not witnesses at former Temple carnivals will be offered at the fair.  It is hoped that the goal of $3000 will be reached through the sale of a varied selection of merchandise and through food purchased in the canteen.  All monies raised will be allocated towards improvements in Temple Beth Israel and the Religious School and part will be used toward establishing a memorial altar in honor of the late Rabbi Moise Bergman.

A canteen serving delicious home cooked foods will be set up in the Garden Room at the hotel.  Mrs. Abe Sklar, chairman in charge, promises such delectable foods as roast turkey, briskets of beef, gefilte fish, chopped chicken livers, baked lima beans and a variety of desserts.  Members of the younger set from the Temple Youth League will assist with the serving. Definitely, plan on having dinner with your family at the County Fair.  Mrs. Nate Ratner has offered her services as dining room hostess, Mrs. Harriet Snyder will assist Mrs. Sklar.  The canteen will be open from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m.

Mrs. Mack Esterson assisted by Mrs. Morris Douglas and Mrs. Leonard Linn are planning decoration of the Monticello Room in the Country Fair theme.  This will be the room where the Fair booths and gift shops will be set up.  A wonderful array of merchandise has been assembled. This will be the ideal place to buy your Chanukah gifts!  Working energetically with Mrs. Esenoff are Mrs. Edward Zuckerman and Mrs. Edward Schwartz who will set up a flower and plant booth.  Mrs. Ben Harris, household furnishings, which will include appliances, lamps and articles of furniture; Mrs. Lou Bickman, jewelry; MRs. Martha Hollander, aprons and hand made items; Mrs.Sig Stein, home-made jams, jellies, cookies and cakes.  A delightful new feature will be a gift shop, where a grant assortment of miscellaneous items may be purchased including children’s toys and clothes.  Working enthusiastically on this venture are Mmes. Rodin Horrow, Florence Corwin, Harry Snyder, Louis Stitsel, Marvin Gray, Leonard Linn and M.D. Goodrich.  No Fair would be complete without a ‘white elephant’ booth. If you have any ‘white elephants’ that you would like to donate to the Beth Israel Sisterhood for this worthwhile venture—please call Mrs. Mack Esterson at B-5183.  She will be happy to arrange for pick-up service. Any salable item will be appreciated—if you wish to contribute to the County Fair—please call Mrs. Esenoff at T-4410.

Members of the Men’s Club of Temple Beth Israel who will assist the Sisterhood women are Morris Douglas, M.D. Goodrich, Richard Lustig, Lon Heiman, Maurice Harris, Nate Schiller, Abe Sklar, Jack Lubo, Art Levine, Ray Bass, Harry Snyder and Alan Lame.

The ‘doors’ of the Fair will be opened at 5 p.m.  A grand orchestra has been hired for the occasion.  You will want to stay for the dancing and entertainment that will be available in the Terrace Room. Arrange for a large party of your friends to get together and enjoy a well evening.  Our ‘waitresses’ for the evening will be at your service to attend to your food wants.

Festivities will last until 2 a.m. The Sisterhood invites the entire community to attend. E know you will have a wonderful time. Remember the date—it’s Sunday, December 18th. The place is Imig Manor Hotel.

Come one-Come all-Come to the Fair!!

Delegation Attends Conference of Histadrut
From Southwestern Jewish Press, December 16, 1949, page 26

By Bess Borushek

A delegation consisting of Mr. I. Domnitz, Mr. and Mrs. Sol Goodman, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Richlin and Mrs. Rose Lansky attended the mammoth conference of Histadrut held on Sunday, Dec. 4th, in Los Angeles. A gathering of over 1000 delegates from the entire Pacific Coast regions as well as from other states attended this conference and many vital issues now facing the State of Israel were discussed. A budget of $500,000.00 was voted to aid Histadrut in executing its numerous functions. Resolutions of protest were sent to President Truman, the State Department, etc., regarding the proposed severing of Jerusalem.

The 1949-50 Labor Zionist Shekel Campaign has already been set in motion by the appointment of a special Shekel Committee consisting of Mr. I Domnitz as chairman and Mr. R. Umansky, treasurer.  Others on the committee are M. A. Olf, Mrs. Rose Abrams and Mrs. Florence Barach. A concerted effort will be made to register every Jewish person of 18 years and over by means of a shekel purchase unless they are affiliated with a Zionist Organization which automatically entitles them to a shekel with their dues payment.

The Chaim Weitzmann Branch of Poale Zion invites those men and women in San Diego who are vitally interested in working for a free and progressive Jewish State to join our ranks for it was the Labor Zionist Pioneers whose practical ideals helped make a reality of century old dreams.  Please contact Mrs. Dora Richlin, Recording Secretary at R 3028 for any further information.

Hadassah
From Southwestern Jewish Press, December 16, 1949, page 26

On December 14th the San Diego Chapter of Hadassah held a luncheon meeting at the Temple Center, to which all Jewish women had been invited.

Mrs. A. P.Nasatir gave a beautiful program on the ritual of lighting the Chanukah Candles.

Mrs. Gabriel Berg, President, gave a report on the National Convention recently held in San Francisco. Among the news highlights that Mrs. Berg brought back from the Convention were: News of the first fashion show of Israel Couture, at which fifteen fashions were displayed. .. the Pledge of further aid by the newly appointed Secretary of Interior, Oscar L. Chapman … Seven child refugee houses to be named for Eddie Cantor … Hadassah raised more than $9,000,000, largest sum in its history.

The local chapter of Hadassah has the largest membership of any women’s organization in San Diego, and has raised over $8,000 during the past year. All funds go toward health services in Israel.

Mrs. Berg stated that she is certain the local chapter will continue to grow, with the ever increasing membership, and the enthusiastic support of its present officers. At present Hadassah is the most outstanding recognized women’s organization in the United States.

Our indexed "Adventures in San Diego Jewish History" series will be a daily feature until we run out of history.
