CARLSBAD, California, November 27,12:40 p.m.—At this moment my colleague Rabbi Gabi Holtzberg and his wife, the Chabad emissaries in Mumbai India, along with other Israeli Tourists, are hostages in their Chabad House in the horrific terrorist attacks on the city. Their
infant son has escaped with the nanny, yet they are still inside. Hundreds of commandos surround the house and it seems that a full-scale assault is imminent.
While everything must be done - and IS being done - by the forces to rescue the hostages, we know that we have the power to storm the Heavens and pray to G-d that this situation and the terrible current circumstances in Mumbai are resolved peacefully immediately.
Please say a prayer, perhaps Psalm 20 (www.chabad.org/6320), for the Chabad Rabbi and Rebbetzin, the Israeli tourists and all the good people of Mumbai.
Please have in mind Gavriel Noach ben Freida Bluma and Rivkah bas Yehudis (Rabbi & Rebbitzin Holtzberg).
Don't stop with a prayer; please take it one step further and remember that a small act of "light" in one part of the world can dispel darkness wherever it may be.
Do a mitzvah:
a) Give charity in their merit
b) Men: Put on Tefillin today (if you already did, see to it that someone
who hasn't yet, should).
c) Women: Resolve to light candles tomorrow evening (if you already do, see
to it that someone who hasn't yet, should).

Search for Chabad family after terrorist strike
MUMBAI, India (November 26, 2008)—The situation is grim late Wednesday in Mumbai (Bombay) India where reports of more than 80 dead and 250 wounded are seeping out of the beleaguered city. Of great concern is the silence from Chabad's representatives to Mumbai, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, pictured at right. No one from the Chabad center has been heard from since the attacks.
The dead and wounded are victims of a sophisticated plot in which seven locations throughout the city were attacked by terrorists. Several of the city's most exclusive hotels, a restaurant, train station, and hotel were bombed. The attacks come as the country is consumed by controversial
elections.
The city, which is India's financial capital, plays host to many foreigners and their embassies are assisting in the search and rescue efforts.
Lubavitch personnel in Bangkok, Israel and New York are working closely with the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the U.S. government to help establish contact with the Holtzbergs and other missing persons in the Chabad House area.
Mumbai's Chabad House, situated near the sites of destruction, is a popular stop for Israeli tourists. The Holtzbergs offer a host of programs, including providing kosher food, to locals and visitors alike.

She won a primary contest and is the nominal leader of the governing party, but the still sitting prime minister seems to be doing everything in his power to assure that she cannot win the national election.
Nominal Prime Minister Olmert continues to meet with the nominal President of Palestine, and has told the still sitting President of the United States that an agreement between Israel and Palestine is possible before the end of their terms.
While he was in Washington, Olmert's one-time close ally the Minister of Finance outlined a program to deal with part of the economic crisis that has begun to threaten Israel with increasing unemployment and problems of finance. The problems look pretty much like what are affecting numerous other countries, and the Finance Ministry's proposals are as complicated and controversial as those offered elsewhere.
That did not stop Olmert from weighing in from Washington with the news that he has his own program of economic reform. This makes him the third or fourth politician adding to the problems of dealing with the economy in the midst of a national election campaign.
Olmert is not running for anything. He has talked about a political comeback, but first he has to deal with the results of ongoing police investigations, including two issues where the police have already recommended indictments.
It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the prime minister is doing everything he can to spoil the chances of party colleagues who did not rally to his defense in the face of all those charges.
Livni, for her part, is either biding her time for the right opportunity to blast the prime minister, and assert her own course toward the election, or is simply dithering.
It she is dithering, it will not be the first time she has been accused of being indecisive. In the language of her critics, and even friendly doubters, the question being asked is, Does she have what it takes to be prime minister?
Livni has distanced herself from Olmert, but so far not with the force of a competitor fighting a threat to her future and that of her party. She has said that she does not agree with his postures with respect to the Palestinians, i.e., proposing details of territorial compromise and the numbers of refugees from 1948 that Israel will accept within its borders. She has also said that she disagrees with Olmert's willingness to offer concessions publicly prior to agreements that include concessions from the other side.
One cannot quarrel with the substance of Livni's comments, but they have not been strong enough to stop Olmert from continuing to operate as if he has a mandate to manage the country's international relations, defense, and economics.
What can she do?
Not a great deal.
She is in a trap where Olmert is likely to be the prime minister until the election on February 10th, and then for another month or so while the victor works to assemble a multi-party coalition. Insofar as the campaign has already started, the Attorney General is not likely to speed up police investigations about several criminal suspicions against Olmert, and then his own decisions about which are weighty enough to justify an indictment. Deliberations on such matters in the case of a ranking politician are likely to be more complex, and slower than decisions about bringing a run of the mill pickpocket or swindler before the judges.
To speed up such processes now, and reach a quick decision would open the Attorney General to charges of political interference. His office is professional, rather than elected or subject to the whim of a single politician. He has considerable discretion according to the law, but he, too, has been accused of being excessively deliberate, or even timid.
So Olmert is free to make noise, and position himself somewhere outside the boundaries of what his party colleagues prefer with respect to crucial issues of international negotiations and economic repair.
He is not likely to have a lasting impact, other than on the chances of his party to win the upcoming election. A prime minister's initiatives gain considerable media attention, perhaps even more so in the bizarre case of a crippled duck making some of his last statements before facing indictments on criminal charges. To actually create policy he requires the assent of majorities of other ministers in his government, and--depending on the issue--relevant committees in the Knesset or the entire Knesset.
Olmert is not likely to get those agreements.
We have heard of gallows humor. Olmert seems to be playing gallows politics.

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—Last week, the first grade students at Hebrew Day worked very hard (and had a lot of fun) in their Hebrew language studies with Morah Stephi to master the letter “Tet." They learned the Hebrew word for chef "Tabach." Each student made a chef hat and then prepared, braided and baked Challot to bring to life the week's parsha (Torah Portion) Chayei Sarah. The children learned that when Avraham's wife Sarah died, three of the miracles that followed her during her life disappeared. One of the miracles was that all week long Chayei Sarah's tent was filled with delicious, plentiful and warm Challah. The children were excited to bring home the Challot they baked to their family to enjoy at their Shabbat table.

Real peace comes from a change of heart, not from the adjustment of boundaries
WASHINGTON, D.C.--Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Olmert visited outgoing President Bush this week. Agence France-Presse reports that Secretary Rice said Palestinian-Israeli talks were "in pretty good shape" and that the failure to reach a deal was "largely because of the political situation in Israel" following Olmert's resignation. We were not surprised that she ignored the Palestinian civil war, Hamas rockets raining in ever-more-precise fashion on Israel and the increasing Iranian aid to the Palestinians, including her buddies in Fatah. We were seriously alarmed that the Israeli prime minister agreed with her - as if he is the indispensible man.
Over the past eight years, President Bush has gotten far more right than wrong on Israel and the Palestinians. But there is a blind spot we fear will continue into the new administration. The "peace process" is predicated on the notion that there is something Israel can do, give or say to the Palestinians that will induce their leadership to abandon the notion that the creation of Israel was a mistake that has to be erased. There is not. Acceptance of the legitimacy of Israel cannot be "bought" by pronouncements or by incremental "gifts" of land or political power. The Palestinians have to make that decision - or not. The current Palestinian civil war is, in part, over that issue.
It's not as if Arabs don't sometimes get there, and not as if the United States can't help them get there. Anwar Sadat and King Hussein got there and peace ensued. The Saudis and the Gulf States are busy sending signals that Iran - and specifically not Israel - is the country that threatens regional stability. That should be encouraged. But there can be no "peace" or "security architecture" or "shelf agreement" before the Palestinian leadership makes the leap. It is folly and arrogance for Israelis or Americans to believe it can be done on the say-so of this or that president or prime minister - incoming or outgoing.
On that note, "Go Iraq!" An Iraqi court acquitted legislator Mithal al-Alusi of crimes the Iraqi government said he committed by visiting Israel for a conference. During Saddam's era, it was illegal for Iraqis to go to Israel and there was a warning stamped in Iraqi passports. The warning is no longer there. The court affirmed that there is no law preventing such trips and restored al-Alusi's parliamentary immunity. Progress.
And Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving comes at a time of tremendous upheaval, economic dislocation and a truly historic presidential election. As a country, we are exhausted and jittery, and nothing makes us think the way ahead will be any easier or calmer.
That makes this a good - no, an imperative - time to remind ourselves of the blessings of our great country, our freedoms, our families, our friends, and our lives. We are grateful to servicemen and women, police officers, fire fighters, airport security screeners, border guards, FBI and CIA agents, the Administration and Members of Congress of both parties who believe and speak and vote with the understanding that our nation is still at war.
We believe it is the combination of all these people working under difficult and often-dangerous circumstances - not a lack of trying on the part of the bad guys - that has have kept us safe for another year. We are grateful to the parents for raising the children who grew into the adults who serve America in so many ways at home and abroad, and grateful to their families for sharing them.

KOTHA-REDDY-PALLEM, India —When I reached this village inthe state of Andra Pradesh, India, last March, I was warmly welcomed by the family of Sadok Yacobi along with some other members of the community.
I was accompanied by a young film maker named Jonas from France with his assistant from Mumbai. Jonas was following me with his camera, as I am one of the characters in his documentary film on the Bene Israel.
Mr Sadok briefed me on the community in terms of the history and the economic status of the overall community members. We made plans as to how the community could benefit from my presence in terms of the Jewish education. The same day we visited a few families in the community.
SCHMOOZING IN ANDHRA PRADESH — Author Sharon Galsulkar, bearded man at left in both photos, sits at left with Sadok Yacobi (who runs the synagogue and the centre) and Shemul Yacobi (a learned man). In photo at right, he is joined by Sadok's family.
In the evening the community gathered in Sadok’s house, which also serves as a small synagogue, for the prayers (Shema and some other songs) and I was introduced to the community. After a brief talk about the purpose of my visit, we decided upon times to meet on regular basis in order to interact and learn more about Judaism. So every day kids had sessions with me at 6 p.m. while with elders it was at 8 p.m.
Next day, after shopping for supplies (wax crayons, markers, white paper sheets, etc) and lunch, we came back to the village to Sadok’s house. In the evening we had sessions with the kids and then with elders, the same till the last day. During the day we would try tovisit the families or meet them in the fields, where they worked. For Shabbat we were joined by Sadok’s elder brother, Shmuel Yacobi, who is quite learned. In terms of the activities with elders, I would give a formal shiur / session in English and Sadok would translate it in Telugu. Each session was followed by the prayer session. The topics covered were: Mitsva, Foundations of Judaism, Parasha Vayikra, and Jewish Festivals.
For the children, we had coloring on paper and songs and games. More songs were recorded so that they can be learnt and retained. We had a nature tour to observe the variety in nature in terms of colors, shapes, music etc. I had my pair of binoculars which enhanced observing colourful birds and butterflies, which are in abundance in their village. The whole theme of the session was to help them see Hashem as the greatest Creator and using Nature to connect to Hashem and praise Him. We always brought snacks for kids during the sessions so they would say the berakhot. Impressions of the Community
I am very touched by the faith shown by the community. The majority of the families look poor – the farmers need to earn daily for their livelihood and in spite of that they won’t work on Shabbath. During the sessions, most of them were fully attentive and eager to learn more. The level of Jewishness in terms of education is extremely low, but faith-wise it is rich.
In terms of assistance, the community needs a good Jewish educator – preferably from their own community, who will also speak their language. And a motivated social worker to have a case study of each family. During the months of April and May these farmers do not work on farms, so they must get loans with heavy interests and then have a tough time repaying them.
Working with kids was quite an experience. Some kids go to school, and some do not. I found most of the kids to be smart and very good at grasping and retaining what was said and taught.
I got from Sadok some packets of candles made by the family and some Challa covers with some embroidery done by Sadok’s wife, for selling in Mumbai to the Bene Israel community. If it works then that can generate some income for the family.
Possible Future Steps
Somebody from the community needs to be educated in Judaism, preferably at a yeshiva in Israel, and sent back to the community.
An expert is needed to work on community financial projects. I think it is important to interact with each family and find out what will work best for them based on their talent and skills and of course theirinclinations.
Some good Jewish Hebrew/English books should be translated; everyone can read their language – Telugu.
I am not sure if anybody can be brought to ORT in Mumbai as I did not find anybody qualified to get a course in ORT. I will look into this and see how somebody can be brought here to study. One of the ideas I thought was of myself and my wife (who is also a Jewish educator plus a modern Hebrew teacher) spending a month with them in their village – the month of May is when most of the people have no work in the fields and are free all day, though that is also the hottest period here.
Another idea was to bring the kids to Mumbai during their summer vacations and keep here for some period and give them a Jewish experience of Mumbai.
It was quite an experience for me. It felt so great to experience a Jewish community other than the three established communities here in India.

LA JOLLA, California--At the San Diego Jewish Book Fair I met her, Omaha Nebraska’s, Book Maven, Nancy Rips. She heard the cries of the Swanson Library in Omaha when it was scheduled to close its doors and collapse due to budget cuts in 2004. Undaunted Nancy Rips led a campaign to make sure the library continued to stand. All of the other Omaha branch libraries also remained open due to her efforts.
Additionally she made an impact in the Omaha juvenile court system after she met a judge who shared her love of reading. Juvenile Court Judge, Douglas Johnson, believed kids could stay out of mischief if they read books .In fact, he requires all juveniles who appear in his court room, to sign up for a library card. The librarians put him in contact with Nancy Rips who started a book give away program. in his court room .Both Judge Douglas Johnson and Nancy Rips agree. "If children learn how to read, they can be anything they want to be.”

She’s also a singer and a stand-in cantor where she conducts services at two local nursing homes. While volunteering at the Omaha Senior Center, she decided to start collecting seder stories.
This led her to compile a book of favorite Passover Seder stories. After three years of knocking on publishers doors, she was able to have her book published. It’s called Seder Stories, Passover Thoughts on Food, Family, and Freedom.
While she claims she’s not a writer, she edits other people’s words with flair. .. Her energy, enthusiasm, and eagerness to share, brought her stories to life. at the San Diego. Jewish Book Fair on a Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. when many of us had just rolled out of bed. She on the other hand, had been awake since 4:30 a.m. San Diego time.
A few excerpts will follow to whet your appetite to read the other savory morsels for your next Passover Seder: Shari Lewis, the puppeteer, mentioned she had 40 cousins all within 7 years of her age. The kids kept guzzling “wine”. It turned out to be prune juice.
Here is one of my favorites, written by an anonymous author: A man sat outside on a park bench eating matzoh. A blind man sat down next to him so the man shared his matzoh with him. The blind man ran his fingers over the matzoh and said “Who wrote this nonsense?’
Seder means order in Hebrew because there is a certain order to the Passover meal.

It was an exciting SDJA girls' volleyball season, but like all good things.... By Gary Rotto
SAN DIEGO--It was an amazing season. The San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) Girls Varsity Volleyball team (17-3) traveled where no SDJA sports team had gone before. Literally. On Saturday night, the Lady Lions faced one of the most experienced volleyball programs in the region in Tri-City Christian. The Eagles won their third straight Division V San Diego Section championship in three straight games by scores of 25-8, 25-11, 25-12. This was accomplished behind 10 returning players.
Even at a neutral site (Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley), SDJA supporters donned white t-shirts in support of the Lions. Besides parents of the players and other classmates, many 6th grade girls followed their favorite high school players, cheering for the mentors. Several of the players on the varsity team double as coaches for the 6th graders teaching the basics of their sports during the 5th period physical education class. The 6th grade girls came to cheer on their coaches/mentors in their matches as the Lions venture into the Regional and State volleyball tournament.
Despite the loss on Saturday, the SDJA women were invited to the State playoffs as a #4 seed on the strength of their record. And off they travelled – along with about 50 supporters including family, SDJA staff and fellow students - to the Westside of Los Angeles, to Pacific Palisades to be specific, to take on Pacifica Christian on Tuesday night. Pacifica Christian (14-3), the champions of the Southern Section Division V (which is principally all of Southern California except for the San Diego Region). The first time trip to Los Angeles ended in disappointment with a three game loss by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-16.
“We recognize all the hard work of the seniors over the past four years. This was the best that we have done in the history of the Academy,” related Charlie Wund, SDJA Athletic Director.“This is something to build on for the future as we build a solid program."
With most of the key members of the team returning next year – the short term with five of the six starters are underclassmen - the future looks bright … and the 6th graders have a taste of what varsity volleyball could be in the future when it’s their turn to continue a tradition of achievement.

Hadassah ‘Mother-Daughter’ Lunch A Success Southwestern Jewish Press, May 12, 1950, page 7

An affair which was, without doubt, unprecedented for human interest and touching gratitude, was the “Mother-Daughter” luncheon meeting of Hadassah on Wednesday, May 10th, at the Temple Center, honoring Mrs. Ida Nasatir, a much loved and worthy recipient. Depicting her life in a musical skit, the audience was delighted with the ingenuity of the home-talent acting and singing. And not least of those enjoying the afternoon was Ida herself, who could be seen smiling throughout, we hope in approval. As further evidence of the love and respect the organization holds for her (as if we needed more proof), Ida was presented with a beautiful gift.
Comprising the cast were: Mmes Victor Selten, David Block, Max Gardner, Irvin Kahn, Joseph Kwint, Julius Levin, David Miller, Max Rabinowitz, William Schwartz, Joseph Silverman, Al Slayan, Maxwell Kaufman and Sigmund Stein. The skit was written by Gertrude Thaler and Thelma Selten. Much enthusiasm bespoke the acceptance of the musical quartette, composed of Mmes Leo Beck, Lawrence Cantor, Edward Kitaen and Harry Mallen, as well as the skit.
The next important project on the agenda for Hadassah is the Ninth Annual Donor luncheon in June, about which more will appear in subsequent issues of the paper. However, put the date on your calendar now—June 6th—Tuesday, and let nothing interfere with your attending, as it promises to be a wind-up of a season unsurpassed by any previous years. Everyone who is nyone will be there, so begin to get your duds together so you’ll be ready to attend this affair.

A report of our annual installation of officers following the luncheon which was held on May 8th at the San Diego Hotel will be given in the next issue of this paper. President Sarah Geller will also onor her officers and board members at a luncheon scheduled for Friday, May 12th, at which time announcement and appointments for all committee heads as well as project chairman will be made.
In addition to following the output of activities outlined for our chapter by Grand Lodge, stimulus will be given by the annual District Convention which will be held in san Diego frpom August 5 to 9 and co-operation of our membership body will be urgently desired.

Applications for the home are being taken by Rose Anderson, Executive Secretary, of the Jewish Welfare Society at 333 Plaza.

The Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary held their regular business meeting May 1 in Temple Center. Plans were formulated and delegates selected for the California Department Convention to be held June 9, 10, and 11 at Del Mar. Sisters, Florence Tobias, Nixie Kern, Marian Mintz, Jean Spatz, Esther Frank, Reba Shifrenson, Henrietta Cohen, Christine Rose, Eleanor Smith, Celia Jacobs and Bess Avrick will represent the Auxiliary as delegates.
The following sisters will attend as alternates: A. Landau, A. Schloss, S. Silberman, B. Siegel, B. Apelman, B. Bard, S. Kaminar, Pauline Rubel, Theresa Furst and L. Yukon.
Sr. Vice President Eva Berger will attend in place of Esther Levitt who is vacationing. Jean Spatz is Reservation Chairman for the convention and can be contacted at T-4739 for further convention details.
May 15 is the next social meeting date. Temple Center, 3rd at Laurel, will be the place, and 9:00 p.m. the time.

MUMBAI, India (November 26, 2008)—The situation is grim late Wednesday in Mumbai (Bombay) India where reports of more than 80 dead and 250 wounded are seeping out of the beleaguered city. Of great concern is the silence from Chabad's representatives to Mumbai, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, pictured at right. No one from the Chabad center has been heard from since the attacks.

WASHINGTON, D.C.--Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Olmert visited outgoing President Bush this week. Agence France-Presse reports that Secretary Rice said Palestinian-Israeli talks were "in pretty good shape" and that the failure to reach a deal was "largely because of the political situation in Israel" following Olmert's resignation. We were not surprised that she ignored the Palestinian civil war, Hamas rockets raining in ever-more-precise fashion on Israel and the increasing Iranian aid to the Palestinians, including her buddies in Fatah. We were seriously alarmed that the Israeli prime minister agreed with her - as if he is the indispensible man.

LA JOLLA, California--At the San Diego Jewish Book Fair I met her, Omaha Nebraska’s, Book Maven, Nancy Rips. She heard the cries of the Swanson Library in Omaha when it was scheduled to close its doors and collapse due to budget cuts in 2004. Undaunted Nancy Rips led a campaign to make sure the library continued to stand. All of the other Omaha branch libraries also remained open due to her efforts.
