December 1: a Gene Roddenberry kind of day with planets and politicians aligned

SAN DIEGO—On Monday night, December 1, over the Southern California sky, Jupiter, Venus and the moon of the Earth were in a close triangular alignment, providing a rare sight of heavenly accord.  Far be it from me to connect bright lights in the sky with great events (Christians have that market cornered, especially at this time of year).  Nevertheless, on that same morning, U.S. President-elect Barack Obama presented his national security team, incorporating his former presidential rival Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State-designate, and keeping as Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who holds the position in President George W. Bush’s administration. 

Moreover, the team he introduced was a partial reflection of the diversity of America, with three of the team members women (Clinton, Homeland Security Secretary-designate Janet Napolitano, and United Nations Ambassador-designate Susan Rice), three of them African-Americans (Obama, Rice and Attorney General-designate Eric Holder) and three of them white males (Vice President-elect Joe Biden, Gates, and General James Jones as the National Security Advisor-designate).

All in all, Earth date Monday, December 1, 2008 was a Gene Roddenberry kind of day, and it is too bad that the creator of the Star Trek series is no longer alive to see his vision actualized.  My 7-year-old grandson Shor and I spend a significant portion of Shor's “sleepover” day each week watching old Star Trek episodes on disk, so the analogy was not far from my consciousness.  Talk about alignments—this was the weekend that Shor and I completed the original Star Trek series (with Captain James T. Kirk and First Officer Mr. Spock) and watched an initial episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his First Officer William T. Riker.)

Like the Obama Administration, the crew of the original Star Trek series showcased diversity.  While Kirk (played by William Shatner) was a white American,  Spock (portrayed by Leonard Nimoy), was green-blooded, had pointy ears, and was the product of a mixed marriage between a father from the planet Vulcan and a mother from Earth.  The regular crewmembers of the Starship Enterprise were an Irish-American chief medical officer, Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), a Scottish chief engineer Montgomery Scott (James Doohan),  a Japanese helm officer Hikaru Sulu (George Takei); a Russian navigator Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig), and an East African communications officer Uhura (Nichelle Nichols).

Shor and I delighted in the fact that in real life both Shatner and Nimoy are fellow Jews—and that the split-fingered Vulcan sign meaning “Live Long and Prosper” was borrowed by Nimoy from the Jewish tradition when a rabbi spreads hands and fingers to bless his or her congregation.  Sometimes, Shor and I also greet each other Vulcan-style.

The last episode of the original series was the movie Star Trek VI—The Undiscovered Country, in which the Klingon Empire, realizing that pollution will destroy its part of space, enters into peace negotiations with the Federation, so that Klingons could immigrate to Federation-controlled space.  There were old warriors on both sides, including Kirk, who were mistrustful of the other side’s intentions.  When the Klingon ambassador was assassinated, members of the crew of the Enterprise—Kirk and McCoy—were falsely accused, arrested, tried, and sentenced to hard labor in a Klingon work camp. But they escaped, were beamed back aboard the Enterprise and eventually were able to prevent another assassination at  the peace negotiations-- Kirk realizing that there are good and bad humanoids on each side.

Interestingly two characters in that final movie of the original Star Trek series found their way into Star Trek: The Next Generation, even as  Gates has found his way into the next presidential administration.  McCoy, by then a 137-year-old admiral, took a tour of the updated Enterprise, conducted by the android Data (Brent Spiner), whose logic and strength were quite reminiscent of the characteristics of McCoy’s old friend and nemesis in the previous series: Spock.

The other character to make the transition was Klingon Colonel Worf (Michael Dorn) , who was the defense lawyer for Kirk during his show trial.  Worf subsequently became a Federation officer, and served on the bridge under Captain Jean-Luc Picard.  He was to show up in series that would follow Star Trek: Next Generation, such as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager.

I had purposely waited until we completed all the episodes of the original Star Trek series before introducing Shor to Star Trek: The Next Generation, figuring that skipping back and forth between series would spoil it for him. I'll try to follow the same procedure with the subsequent series.  

It was with great anticipation that my grandson and I watched the first Next Generation episode, a story in which the new crew faced an unexpected challenge—as perhaps Obama’s administration will. 

Instead of old enemies, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and First Officer Riker (Jonathan Frakes) had to deal with a super-intelligent, supernatural space power—the mysterious Q (John de Lancie)—who could create events and people just by imagining them.  

Some people believe that Obama will be "tested" early in his administration by outside forces who may manufacture a crisis.

Similarly, in this episode of Next Generation, Q devised a test to determine whether humans (and their Klingon and Vulcan allies) were really savages—a scenario in which an ultramodern space station proved to be a living organism that converted energy into matter.  When at last Picard et al solved the puzzle, in a humanitarian gesture, they provided the space station with some of their galaxy-class starship’s own energy, thereby allowing it to join its mate in space.  Q was not satisfied, but he permitted the Enterprise crew to resume their mission of exploration.  We know he will be b-a-a-c-k. 

Talk about alignments, I kid you not, Shor’s current homework project at Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School, where he is a second grader, is to do a report on the life of Albert Einstein, whose famous formulation, E=MC squared, postulated the relationship between matter and energy.  We know about atomic energy being pried from matter, but in this episode Roddenberry offered a vision of matter being made from energy.

On such a day as December 1, 2008, Gene Roddenberry would have been so proud!

Ancient olive tree now marks site where rocket attack victim fell on kibbutz

KIBBUTZ KFAR AZA, Israel--Last week a truck transported an extraordinary tree to this kibbutz situated in the municipality of Shaar Hanegev.  It was a 450-year-old olive from the Galilee.

After the transfer the olive tree was planted in the front garden belonging to the Kaddoshim family at the exact spot were Jimmy Kaddoshim z"l,  kibbutz member of Kfar Aza, was killed by a mortar attack on the 6th of May 2008. Jimmy's son, Eyal, took the photo of the tree at the left. In front of it are Jimmy's wife, Anna, and Zacharia Madmoni, the gardens director of Sha'ar Hanegev.

Jimmy had been working in his garden outside the house when the mortar hit and killed him instantly.

Anna Kaddoshim commented at last week’s ceremony: "We give new life and plant roots at the exact place where a life was cut down. We will continue to live in this place and we will not go anywhere
else."

Jimmy's birthday is in December and for that occasion family and friends plan plans another  ceremony near the tree.

The transfer of the olive tree from the north of Israel to the Northern Negev was a joint effort that involved the Kaddoshim family, Elisha Mizrachi JNF director of the Northern Negev, and Madmoni.

This past Friday mortars fell on the Israel army base situated near neighboring  Kibbutz Nahal Oz.  Eight soldiers were wounded, two
of them seriously. One soldier lost his legs and another soldier suffered severe head injuries.

It seems that Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has changed his mind concerning the allocation of resources to this area of Israel along the Gaza Strip. The resources are to be used to secure the most-threatened areas and to immediately start to build fortified rooms.

Among recipients will be 11 border communities, including two in the Sha’ar Hanegev municipality (Kibbutz Kfar Aza and Kibbutz Or Haner) and the neighboring city of Sderot.
 
Olmert had previously opposed using funds in this way. However, residents of the threatened areas along with their elected local governments appealed to Israel’s Supreme Court in order to receive the needed resources.

Next week the finance committee of the Knesset will consider Olmert’s suggestion to budget 600 million shekels for fortified rooms in the settlements.

Sha’ar Hanegev Mayor Alon Schuster has been contacting government ministers and members of the Knesset’s finance committee to buttress support for Olmert’s new proposal.

Ruth Ilse Klampert is a double survivor

SAN DIEGO—It took a few years, but Ruth Ilse Klampert is finally able to talk about some of the most difficult times in her life - and in the history of the world.  Born in 1935, in Austria, Ruth and her mother were among the last Jews to leave Hitler's Europe - and it was years before she was to learn that her father and grandmother had died in the concentration camps.

"Part of the healing comes from being able to share my story with others," tells Klampert, who has written a book/CD - Ilse's Journey -  about those early years.   "So many people don't realize how much pain and guilt the survivors have - especially those who escaped.  But the idea of 'survivor guilt' is something that reverberates throughout many lives, not just mine."

When Ruth speaks, she discusses the early years - but also goes into detail about the severe depression that took 14 years of her life while living in Hawaii.   Married with three children, Ruth began experiencing panic attacks and suffered from agoraphobia, a fear of being out in public.   After her divorce (more than 30 years of marriage), Ruth returned to Austria and found the seeds to healing from the past - she spoke in German for the first time since leaving.

Then, in 1990, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.  Her next battle would leave her a survivor again - and her healing path is part of what she discusses in lectures , which she had delivered to such organizations as Toastmasters, OASIS and onstage in the popular Tales from the Far Side of 50.  Today a resident of San Diego, Klampert has served over the years as a friendly resource for numerous San Diego area cancer patients.
Ilse's Journey is a moving view of the Holocaust from a different perspective – through the eyes of a young child who escapes – but who loses many dear family members - including two close cousins who were her age.  Touching and with evocative images of both Europe and New York during wartime, this memoir adds another dimension to the Jewish experience.

SAN DIEGO—On Sunday evening, December 21, Jews around the world will light the first of eight candles (with one added each successive night) to commemorate the holiday of Chanukah.  They will sing about the miracles of the Maccabee’s victory over the Greco-Syrian armies, and the little jug of oil that burned for eight days, although it only contained oil for one day.

The story of Chanukah is recorded in the Second book of the Maccabees, chapter 10, of the Apocrypha, (post Biblical writings),  and describes the Maccabean victory that took place in 164 BCE (Before the Common Era), and the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev (December).  (How interesting that the later Christian movement also chose the 25th of December for Christmas! ) There is, however, no mention of a jug of oil in the Book of Maccabees, so where did the story of the jar of oil originate, and why do we celebrate Chanukah for eight days, rather than one day?

Three months prior (September) to the re- dedication in 164 BCE, the temple in Jerusalem was yet in ruins and disarray. Consequently, the usual eight day Festival of Sukkot could not have been observed.   Once the temple was cleansed and rededicated on the 25 day of Kislev (December), a decision had to be made whether the  past Sukkot be skipped for that year or celebrated (although late) now that the temple was cleansed.  To cover all bases, it was decided to observe the belated eight day Sukkot Festival, and combine it with the celebration of the Maccabean victory, also for eight days, and give it a new name, Chanukah (Dedication).    Of course, in the following years, Sukkot continued to be observed at its usual time of September, and Chanukah became an annual holiday unto itself.

Six hundred and forty four years after the original Chanukah occurred, the rabbis of the 6th century decided to play down the negativism of war. They invented the charming story about a single jar of oil intended for the Ner Tamid (Eternal lamp over the ark) that miraculously burned for eight days.  The first mention of this  “jar of oil miracle” appeared in the Babylonian Talmud about 500 C.E. (Common Era).  Two refinements of the Chanukah story came into being:  toning down the dangers of war, and adding the legend of the jar of oil.  The tactile ritual of lighting candles naturally followed.

The dreydle, also spelled dreidel, was later added to the festivities, and has a single Hebrew letter, on each of its four sides, representing the words, “A great miracle happened there”( Nes Gadol Haya Sham). In Israel, one leter on the dreydle has been changed. The shin is replaced with a pei, transforming the phrase into ,”A great miracle happened  here."  Dreidel is a derivative of a German word meaning, “top”, and is used in a gambling game. Chanukah was one of the few times of the year when the rabbis permitted games of chance, and investing it with Jewish values as a reminder of the importance of Chanukah.  Indeed the victory of the small Maccabean army’s victory over the larger and stronger forces of the Greco-Syrians was a miracle. This victory brought religious freedom and national independence to the Jews of ancient Palestine.

 In anticipation of Chanukah’s  arrival in a few weeks, here are two popular dreydle folk songs arranged for, and performed by a marvelous choral group as  recorded at an Inter-faith concert at the Mission San Luis Rey Church  under the direction of Ron Gillis. The performance of  Jewish music at the church was probably a “first” in its history.

In the following weeks, we will feature more Chanukah songs, also recorded live in concert, plus some songs to sing along with me, all featured on my CD, Standing Ovation.

Survey Exposes Neglect of Jewish Youth In San Diego

A survey by the San Diego Jewish Community Center association recently exposed the fact that the youth of this community believe that they are being sadly neglected in regard to their needs.

Out of 302 questionnaires sent to the youths between the ages of 12 to 22, more than 85 replies were received within one week. The answers to some of the questions proved startling and revealing.

97% of the replies to the question “Do you think that San Diego needs a Jewish Community Center?” were Yes.  Other information gleaned from the survey from the first week’s returns showed that:

A.  61 youth that that there are not enough cultural activities for them at the present in san Diego; 21 thought there were enough.

B.  63 youths said there were insufficient social activities; 20 thought there were sufficient social activities.

C.  79 youth felt there weren’t enough recreational activities; 3 thought there were.

D. 53 youth were Synagogue or Temple affiliated, 33 were unaffiliated.

E.  84 youth or 99% of those who replied, said that they would cooperate in helping obtain members when the Jewish Community center held its membership campaign. 

Here are some of the comments received from our youth telling what they thing:

A 13-year-old girl commented: “If you want the young people to have  more interest in Jewish life, make Jewish life of interest to them.  Adults don’t like to do what teenagers like to do and we feel the same way.”

A 22-year-old boy underlined this remark: “The need is great for a Jewish Community Center in San Diego.”

An 18-year-old girl said, “Having come from a city in which there was an active community, I realize their worth, and think that San Diego has a very definite need for a center which would be open to and provide activities for all age and social levels.  I would welcome the opportunity to help achieve this.:

A 22-year-old boy added, “Though I am not Jewish, I do attend meetings at Hillel at San Diego State College, Massada, etc., and have many, many Jewish friends.  I have answer the above questions as if I were Jewish—which would be an honor.  I believe such activities are indeed vital!”

A 16-year-old girl said, “People should take more of an interest in their youth and try to do things for them.”

A 15-year-old girl made the comment, “I think the idea of starting a center would greatly benefit the teen-agers and help them to be good citizen and get along with other people.  I’m 100% for it!  I would like very much to help in any way I can.”

A 22-year-old boy commented, “The Jewish Community Center will not solve the entire problem of the Jewish youth in San Diego, but it will be a factor that will help.  I hope people don’t expect a miracle from it.”

An 18-year-old girl added, “ A center is practically a necessity to get our youth together n a common plane.  Where else can we get to understand each other and make friends?”

The Jewish Community Center Association made the following statement: “Neglect of our youth may cost us dearly in the future. We must face our responsibility squarely.

“Do we want our children to lead normal and useful lives?  Other Jewish Communities have done their part .  Can we afford to deprive our youth of the opportunities for which they ask.

“Get behind the Jewish Community Center movement and do your part in making San Diego a better place to live.”


Open House for New Americans

On Sunday, May 29, from two to four in the afternoon, Rabbi and MR.s Morton J. Cohn will hold an open house at their home, 1844 Sheridan Avenue, for the New Americans in our community.

Members of the Council of Jewish Women, who have been largely responsible for the local émigré program, are invited to attend along with their husbands.

Guests of honor will be Mayor and Mrs. Harley Knox, Judge and Mrs. Jacob Weinberger and Judge and Mrs. Frank Molina.


Monster ‘Political Rally’ Wednesday, May 31st at Temple Center

The Temple Center will be the scene of a ‘political rally’ on Wednesday, May 31st, at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

The program, sponsored by the Men’s Club of Temple Beth Israel, will present most of the leading candidates for the primaries in this state.  Included among those whohave accepted the invitations to speak are James Roosevelt, candidate for Governor; Senator George Miller, Jr., candidate for Lt. Governor; Rear Admiral (Ret) Leslie Gehres, candidate for State Senate; State Senator Kraft, incumbent; Congressman Clinton D. McKinnon, incumbent; Robert Driver, State Senate; Maj. E. E. Eiler, U.S. House of Representatives; Fred Simpson, State Senate; District Attorney Don Keller, Incumbent; Roland DeFrere, candidate for  District Attorney; John S. Lyons, Coroner; A.E. Since the seating capacity of the Temple Center is limited, it is suggested that early arrival will insure a seat. The program is scheduled to start promptly at 7:30 p.m. and is under the dirction of Allan Lame and Maxwell Kaufman of the Men’s Club.


Campaign Continues as Clean-Up Day Is Planned

Promoted to “Majors” for their excellent work, the leaders of Magic Carpet Day met last Wednesday to plan a “Clean Up Day” to “Keep the Miracle Alive.”

Devised to make for the greatest amount of coverage possible, plans were outlined for the personal contact of every Jewish man, woman and young person in san Diego, who is not yet one of the 1,409 contributors who have given over $150,000 to date.

With still $60,000 to be secured from 1949 givers who have not as yet pledged in 1950, drive leaders are confident of exceeding 1949 results of $205,000.

“Pledges and cash are vital,” said Victor Schulman, President of the Fund.  “If San Diego Jewry fails in its 1950 efforts and is forced to ‘welch’ on its commitments, not only will Overseas and Israel needs be affected, but national seminaries, hospital and civic protective agencies such as the Jewish Welfare Society, San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged, the Jewish Community Center and the Jeish Community Relations Council may also feel the reduction in their programs.

Along with plans for “Clean Up Day,” Murray Goodrich and Nathaniel Ratner, General Campaign co-chairmen, announced that the women and young people will renew their efforts to clean up their portion of the campaign during the balance of May and early June.
