Bush's accomplishments in the Middle
East merit, at best, some 'polite applause.'

JERUSALEM—It is no exaggeration to note that the American public is doubtful about President Bush's accomplishments. Disapproval ratings in some polls are above 70 percent.

He is talking about the brighter spots in his eight years. We should expect no less from a man who worked his way to the top. Modesty is rare among politicians..

He has described the dismal scenes in the Middle East early in his administration, and the improvements since then. These include:

—The end of Saddam Hussein, cruel to his own people and the initiator of two wars. The beginning of American troop withdrawals. "Iraq has gone from an enemy of America to a friend of America, from sponsoring terror to fighting terror, and from a brutal dictatorship to a multi-religious, multi-ethnic constitutional democracy."

—An agreement with Libya to end that country's developing weapons of mass destruction.
Increases in freedom, dignity, and hope in several countries of the Middle East, including greater rights for women.

—The end of Syrian dominance of Lebanon. ". . . for the first time in three decades, the people of Lebanon are free from Syrian military occupation."

—Rejection of terror, and a recognition of Israel's right to exist by the Palestinian leadership, along with the beginning of fruitful negotiations between Israel and Palestine. "There is now greater international consensus that at any point in modern memory. Israelis, Palestinians, and Arabs recognize the creation of a peaceful, democratic Palestinian state is in their interests. And through the Annapolis process, they started down a path that will end with two states living side by side in peace."

—The president acknowledges that not all is rosy. Iran continues to advance its nuclear option. The United States and its allies have imposed sanctions, that so far have not achieved their goal. "We have made our bottom line clear: For the safety of our people and the peace of the world, America will not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. "

One is tempted to let the president retire with polite applause. It is his due, and he shall receive it from me after some modest comments about his claims.

The appearance of a multi-ethnic democracy in Iraq may only be the product of America's forceful babysitting. Car bombs and other abominations occur frequently. President-elect Obama says that he can withdraw combat troops, but not right away, and he expects to leave support troops indefinitely. We should remember what support troops produced from the early days of Vietnam. It is too early to conclude that conditions in Iraq and for its neighbors are better or worse than before the American invasion. Saddam was a cruel dictator, but restrained by sanctions. The invasion and the American-protected regime have escalated Islamic extremism, directed against America and its allies.

It is always a puzzle to figure out who is ruling Lebanon. Currently it looks like Hizbollah is close to the driver's seat. Political and military leaders, Christian as well as Muslim, are making obsequious pilgrimages to Damascus.

Palestinians complain about the lack of movement in talks with Israel. When Ehud Olmert claims real progress, few Israelis believe him. None of the contenders in the run up to the Israeli elections are emphasizing how they would deal with the Palestinians. If the issue is not dead, it is not a burning item on the agenda.

An explanation for Israel's lack of enthusiasm for Palestine is an issue that George W. Bush did not emphasize in his remarks: Gaza. His administration pushed the Palestinians to the election that put Hamas in power, and has resulted in Gaza becoming one of the darker spots in the Middle East. The regime ascribes to Islamic fundamentalism. An Israeli invasion in response to continued rocket attacks seems inevitable, sooner or later. Meanwhile, a blockade is keeping the people of Gaza on short rations. Israelis wonder if they can make peace with the Palestinians of the West Bank while Gaza remains as it is.

The president did not mention Afghanistan in this presentation. Outside of the Middle East? Not according to conventional definitions. An attack against Afghanistan in response to 9-11 was more justified than the attack against Iraq, and it worked initially to crush the Taliban. Now American planners are talking about concentrating defenses around the capital of Kabul. That is not a good sign.
It is time for polite applause. The Middle East might have been worse without President Bush's eight years.

To run or not —that's Frydenberg's question

MELBOURNE - As a director of global banking for Deutsche Bank, Joshua Frydenberg works in a fast-paced, stimulating environment. And- in spite of an economy that has gone into the tank, he would presumably be well remunerated.

Yet for all that, it is politics that stirs the blood of the 37-year-old. And he is now crunching the numbers and working the phones to decide whether to run again for Liberal Party pre-selection for the federal seat of Kooyong, (the electorate of Kooyong is one of the safest Conservative seats in Australia) following the decision by sitting member Petro Georgiou to retire at the next federal election, in 2010.

He was jilted at his previous attempt, in 2006, when the party powerbrokers, including state Liberal leader Ted Baillieu and Michael Kroger, rallied behind Georgiou, a party stalwart and one of the last of the “small- l” Liberals.

Georgiou finished with 62 of the 85 delegate votes, a result that left the ambitious Frydenberg with egg on his face, particularly given the publicity surrounding his bid to win the seat.

This time around, the former Mount Scopus and Bialik student is adopting a more low-key approach. “I am very interested in running and will consult widely within the electorate before I make a final announcement,” he says.

The one-time aspiring tennis professional boasts a glittering CV with a masters degree in international relations from Oxford University, followed by stints as an adviser to former foreign minister Alexander Downer and former prime minister John Howard, before moving into merchant banking.

He is also a widely published commentator on international affairs in the Australian media.

Does he have the numbers? Media reports suggest he has stacked the party branches with supporters, although he is a vice-president of one party branch within Kooyong. He is also active in the influential Kooyong 2000 club and has resisted entreaties to stand for more marginal seats.

But the rules of engagement have changed. All party members within the electorate, about 1000 all up, are eligible to vote along with 100 party members around the state vote before the middle of next year.

Friends have told Frydenberg that he went “too early” last time around and perhaps misread Georgiou’s influence and popularity within the party. Those same people are urging him to run again because they believe he will be an excellent politician.

But whether Georgiou and his friends are prepared to forgive and forget may determine whether, in three years time, Frydenberg works out of Collins Street or Canberra.


Success for five Jewish candidates at Council elections

MELBOURNE - Five Jewish councillors will represent residents in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs following last Saturday’s election.

Margaret Esakoff, Michael Lipshutz and Steven Tang were all re-elected to Glen Eira City Council, while Jamie Hyams, who has served as a councillor previously, but not on the most recent council, also won a spot.

Judith Klepner was re-elected unopposed to Port Phillip Council.

Dick Gross, a former mayor of Port Phillip and the current president of the Municipal Association of Victoria, lost his seat after 12 years on council. “I’m pretty upset, but life goes on,” Gross said “I had a lot to lose and I lost it.”

Gross faced a tough battle, contested largely over the controversial St Kilda Triangle precinct plans, which he supported.

In the end, Greens candidate John Middleton defeated him on preferences.
While Tang was absent from Glen Eira’s formal declaration of results, the other three Jewish candidates thanked locals for helping to secure their election.

“I want to thank the residents of Glen Eira for showing their support for re-electing me,” Lipshutz said.

Esakoff, who was elected first in her ward with more than 6000 primary votes, said she was “overwhelmed by the result." She also thanked her husband Jack for his “hard yakka” in helping her get re-elected.

Hyams joked that it was nice to be back on council after his “sabbatical” and commended his fellow candidates on contesting a clean campaign.

In other results, former Glen Eira councillor Henry Buch lost his seat, while Raymond Landes and Nellie Khoroshina were unsuccessful in their bids for the council.

Port Phillip Special School principal Bella Irlicht failed to win a seat on Bayside Council and Reuben Zylberszpic and Les Rosenblatt were not elected in Port Phillip.

Gary Singer, a former councillor in the City of Melbourne under John So, came fourth in his bid to become Lord Mayor.

Anti-Semitic incidents on the rise in Australia

SYDNEY - Australian Jews suffered a record 652 anti-Semitic incidents in the 12 months to October, almost twice the average of the past 18 years.

The 2007-08 tally was two per cent above that of the period ending September 30 last year.

These unsettling figures were revealed to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) annual conference in Sydney this week by researcher Jeremy Jones, who submitted his annual report on anti-Semitism in Australia.

Jones, who is director of community affairs for the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council, said he was particularly concerned about anti-Jewish propaganda from extremist organisations, much of it published in fringe publications and on the internet.
In his report to the ECAJ, he noted "particular concern at the negative impact of material from a variety of overseas sources which has as its thesis an eternal enmity of Muslims towards Jews".

"During the 12 months in review, the combined number of incidents involving physical assault, property damage and direct, face-to-face harassment was almost three times the previous average," Jones stated.

He said online communities, Facebook and YouTube "have been the venues of crude and intense anti-Jewish prejudice being expressed openly and unashamedly. While the sum total of reports of each and all such behaviour is not sufficient to suggest that it is rampant, it is nevertheless cause for genuine concern".

On a brighter note, Jones said mainstream debate surrounding last year's federal election was reasonably free of anti-Semitism "despite efforts by anti-Jewish groups and individualS."

The same applied to communal reactions to the extradition request by Hungary for alleged Nazi war criminal Charles Zentai, the Federal Court contempt hearing under the Racial Hatred Act concerning Fredrick Toben and Parliament's motion congratulating Israel on its 60th anniversar.

Reports of threats conveyed to the Jewish community by phone and mail were less than a third of the average over the previous 18 years.

Phone calls, which often contained extreme anti-Semitic abuse, were at the lowest rate in 19 years and hate mail was at the third lowest rate in 19 years.

"But abusive and threatening mail continued to be received at private homes and by Jewish institutions."

Jones said that during the review period, graffiti incidents were the second lowest in eight years and at 80 per cent of the average for all years.

On interfaith relations, he said the Jewish and Islamic communities in Australia "enjoy a generally positive relationship and there is little evidence that anti-Jewish sentiment is widespread. At the public, leadership level, Muslim and Jewish Australians regularly meet, and promote understanding and tolerance."

Jones said otherwise excellent relations between Australian Jews and Christians were sometimes marred by "derogatory references to the Jewish religion" from some church figures.

"There was a concern expressed by some members of the Jewish community and others sympathetic to it, that the staging of a re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross, during the Papal visit to Sydney, would reinforce or encourage anti-Jewish stereotypes and prejudice, but there were efforts made by the Catholic Church and the Jewish community to minimise this potential harm, apparently successfully."


Senate finds no evidence of campus bias

CANBERRA - A Senate inquiry into bias in Australian schools and universities has failed to address concerns about anti-Israel sentiment on campus.

The inquiry, released on Thursday, found that there was no evidence of any systematic bias in the education system. This includes anti-Israel or anti-Semitic bias.

“Nothing has emerged from the inquiry which invites the reconsideration of current policy apart from issues to do with effective monitoring of teacher quality,” the inquiry reported in its conclusion.

In total, 69 inquiry submissions were received from across Australia, including one from the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council and another one from both the Australasian Union of Jewish Students and the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

Some of the grievances reported in these two submissions – and in others from Liberal Party student groups – included an unbalanced portrayal of Israel in lecture halls, criticisms of some universities for failing to disclose funding and suggestions that oversight committees and additional peer review be used to prevent bias.

The inquiry, led by Labor senator Gavin Marshall, found that examples of bias on campus were minimal and largely anecdotal.

Senator Marshall emphasised that with only a “tiny number” of the country’s 530,000 full time undergraduate students choosing to make reports to the inquiry, “there can be no basis for arguing that universities are under the control of the Left”.

While the inquiry did not dispute the presence of a small amount of bias on campus, it found that the all universities have internal mechanisms for dealing with complaints.

“The committee remains puzzled as to why it [complaint of bias] has not been presented through formal complaints processes rather than to a Senate committee.

“The main issue at stake here is more likely to be teaching quality,” the report surmised.

In addition, the inquiry reported that universities have a role in challenging young people with new ideas and opinions.

“There can be no effective way of ensuring that a small proportion of undergraduates will not be distressed by some of their encounters with alternative views.”

A discordant note at conference

SYDNEY - The annual conference of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) in Sydney ended prematurely and in uproar on Monday after a verbal clash over the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation (AHC)'s legal troubles with its former spiritual head, Rabbi Yossi Engel.

The dispute centred on a purported lack of action by the Organisation of Rabbis of Australasia (ORA) on the dispute between the AHC and Rabbi Engel.

Rabbi Engel is currently waiting to hear whether he will be charged by South Australian police on nine counts of false pretences and eight counts of deception in relation to funding applications made by a South Australian Jewish school to the state's Ethnic Schools Board.

His wife Chana Engel is also waiting to see whether she will be charged.

In an impassioned speech, Jewish Community Council of South Australia president Norman Schueler accused the ORA of hiding behind protocols, and said that the rabbinic body's "intransigence in this matter" had caused the destruction of "160 years of the proud history of Adelaide Hebrew Congregation."

Schueler added that the rabbis of the ORA will "go down in history" as having failed to uphold the trust of the community, and had brought "shame to the rabbinic office."

The ECAJ conference agenda had allotted ORA representatives 45 minutes to discuss ORA representation at ECAJ meetings.

But the heated discussion continued for around 90 minutes, with individuals stating the ORA did not deserve communal respect, especially with regard to its lack of action over the AHC dispute and in addressing problems faced by agunot (women whose husbands refuse to grant them Jewish divorces).

Newly elected ORA president Rabbi Dovid Freilich, and ORA representatives Rabbi Moshe Gutnick and Rabbi Yossi Feldman, answered the accusations.

Rabbi Freilich said: "As the newly elected ORA president, the first thing I did was to travel to Adelaide and present a donation to the AHC on behalf of the ORA."

He went on to pledge the ORA's support in helping to resolve the situation at the AHC.
Rabbi Freilich said that, just as the non-Jewish world respects its spiritual leaders, the ORA hoped the ECAJ would consult the Orthodox rabbinic organisation on halachic matters to present a united front and prevent embarrassment.

The discussion became more abrasive when Rabbi Gutnick, who had been under pressure to ask Rabbi Engel to stand aside until his dispute with the AHC was resolved, said the ORA "did not have anything in its constitution" that would allow it to take action.

"And Rabbi Engel is being pilloried for something he feels he did not do," he added.
ECAJ president Robert Goot said: "My difficulty with the ORA is that they set themselves, and their membership, above the law of the land.

"I appeal to Rabbi Freilich to seriously consider what has already occurred [in Adelaide], and act accordingly," Goot added.

Others in attendance expressed their frustrations with the ORA's lack of response, including Jewish Community Council of Victoria president John Searle, who said: "Some rabbis expect respect, but don't do anything to earn respect."

"This failure to hear the mood of the community and to respond [to the situation in Adelaide] is causing the community to lose faith in the rabbinate," added Shalom Institute director Peta Jones Pellach. "It is a tragic situation."

ECAJ immediate past president Grahame Leonard then asked that the ECAJ formally adopt the resolution on the participation of the ORA in ECAJ meetings. The motion passed and the conference was adjourned.

So Why Kill the Rabbi?

CANBERRA - Mr Danby (Melbourne Ports) (9.36a.m.)- London's Times asks today: "So why kill the rabbi?" Indeed, why kill any rabbi? All Australians were outraged at the murder of our countrymen Brett Taylor and Doug Markell and the other mainly Indian citizens murdered in Mumbai a few days ago. I cannot surpass the insights of the columnist from the London Times David Aaronovitch about the people he calls "explanists", who make excuses for those who, with murderous ideologies, single out people who are Australian or British or American, or who are Jewish. Mr. Aaronovitch says that we cannot equivocate the heinous crimes committed by the terrorists with their struggle against Hindu aggression or Indian oppression. He says that there is no justification in killing innocent people, Christian, Hindu or Jew, or British, American or Australian.

The fact that nine people died in a synagogue, an outreach centre called the Chabad house in Mumbai is a particular tragedy for many Australian Jews. It is especially tragic for those who knew the couple who ran the centre, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivkah, both of whom were murdered there. Terrible reports on various international news wires indicate that some of the victims were all tortured before they were killed. This kind of beastality is hard to face but we must because it is being discussed in the international press. This young religious couple were a paradigm of kind-hearted and dedicated Chabad emissaries serving the tiny Jewish community in Mumbai, and helping people who were suffering from drug addiction and poverty. They offered their hospitality to Israeli backpackers and Jewish visitors, and treated them with uplifting spiritual experiences. Their Chabad house, their synagogue, served as a safe haven and an island for yiddishkeit for Jewish people travelling through Mumbai and India. They could stay at the centre and were offered free kosher meals, and could participate in services over Shabbat. Reb Gavriel and Rebbetzin Rivka represented the ultimate in human kindness and selflessness. Their presence in Mumbai and on earth will be sadly missed.


Melbourne woman's miraculous survival in Mumbai

MELBOURNE— Miriam Broder thinks her Jewish beliefs played a small role in her miraculous escape from Mumbai’s Oberoi Hotel.

Broder, who was in India on a meditation tour, went up to her room on the hotel’s 18th floor late on Thursday evening (November 27).

Before she had an opportunity to fall asleep, Broder and her roommate heard what they thought were ­firecrackers.

“We didn’t think anything of it,” she said. “It didn’t occur to me [that it was terrorism]. It was a five-star hotel.”

After hearing more loud noises, Broder and her roommate took their valuables and decided to get out of the building.

“I had hesitation, I thought – am I doing the right thing?”

When she entered the corridor, it was filled with smoke and the smoke detectors began blaring. They made their way down 18 flights of stairs in the darkness and out onto the street, where they were ushered to safety.

Unfortunately, Broder later learnt that others staying on her floor and a couple of people in her meditation group had not been so lucky.

“They [the terrorists] had master keys and they shot other people on the 18th floor,” she said.

On the ground, Broder was cared for by local strangers who fed, clothed and protected her.

“It really showed that love is more powerful than hate,” she said, adding that for her, the whole experience was a personal transformation.

It later occurred to Broder, who has an interest in Jewish numerology, that the floor she was on, 18, symbolised “chai” or life. “I always look at numbers,” she said.

The Jewish - Koori Connections 70 years ago

MELBOURNE - When many countries around the world did not act, he did," Alfred "Boydy" Turner told 300 people at Victoria's Parliament House this week.

Exactly 70 years ago, Turner's grandfather, William Cooper an Aboriginal rights activist marched from his home in Footscray, in Melbourne's west, to the Nazi-German consulate in South Melbourne.

And when he arrived, Cooper delivered a formal protest against Kristallnacht a catastrophe that occurred in countries he had not seen to a people he did not know.

At the time, almost nobody else around the world had the courage to protest against the Nazi regime's treatment of the Jewish people.

"This quiet man found time for others," his emotional 80-year-old grandson said.
"Today, he would apologise for not being able to do more in 1938."

Members of Melbourne's Jewish and indigenous communities turned out in force on December 2 to remember and pay tribute to Cooper.

Victorian Premier John Brumby, federal indigenous affairs minister Jenny Macklin and Jewish Community Council of Victoria president John Searle all spoke about the importance of Cooper's actions.

In Cooper's honour, the Jewish National Fund will plant 70 trees in the Martyr's Forest, and the Israeli Embassy in Australia will fund a family member's travel to Israel to witness the planting.

Ambassador Yuval Rotem, who took a personal interest in the protest after reading about it on a museum visit .honoured Cooper and the Australian Aboriginal League.

"Alone, they stood at the door and, although their message was largely ignored, it is still heard by the pages of history," the ambassador said.

Rotem also warned about the danger of silence in the face of injustice."The convenience of silence is as evil as the greatest crime," he said. "We cannot afford the luxury of inaction, indifference and silence."

At the conclusion of the event, Shmuel Rosenkranz, a Jewish community stalwart and Kristallnacht survivor, spoke about the significance of Cooper's protest.

Rosenkranz recalled that when he arrived in Australia in 1939, somebody showed him a newspaper cutting reporting the protest.

"The rest of the world was silent, but William Cooper and the Australian Aboriginal League had the courage, in spite of all their problems, to care and not be bystanders," Rosenkranz said.

"Let us not be bystanders. Let us be activists to avoid another Kristallnacht anywhere in the world."

Israeli Ambassador Yuval Rotem had this to say at Victoria's Parliament House on December 2:

"First, I would like to show my respect and acknowledge the Elders, forebears, and people of the Kulin nation, the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which this important event takes place.

Some 70 years ago, the brutal atrocities that man inflicted upon his fellow man in the last century reached their apex in the cruel murder of 6 million Jews at the hands of the Nazi regime.

"The bitter irony is that the world saw, in plain view, the violence and destruction that Hitler was planning to inflict upon the Jews.

"Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass, which took place 70 years ago, gave a blueprint for the misery, torment, torture and murder of Jews by the Nazis.

"Rabbi Joachim Prince, speaking in 1963, understood the nature of the issue much more clearly when he declared:

“'When I was the Rabbi of the Jewish community in Berlin under the Nazi Regime, I learned many things. The most important thing that I learned is that bigotry and hatred are not the most urgent problem. The most urgent, the most disgraceful, the most shameful and the most tragic problem is silence.'

"The problem with silence is that it allows those who abuse their power to continue to do so knowing that they will not be challenged, their methods will not be tested and their hatreds will not be confronted.

"Pastor Martin Niemoller, imprisoned in concentration camps by the Nazis, explained how this phenomenon would eventually destroy us all in his poem, First They Came …

"'In Germany, they came first for the Communists
'And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist
'And then they came for the Jews
'And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew
'And then they came for the trade unionists
'And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist
'And then … they came for me ...
'And by that time there was no one left to speak up.'

"Both the Rabbi and the Pastor convey to us the same message: that silence is the deadliest enemy.

"However, unlike so many, one man defied the silence. One man who gave a sense of hope for humanity by standing up for what was right and just.

"He was not even Jewish, nor did he speak Hebrew. He had no personal connection to Judaism, its culture, or its history, but none of this stood in the way of him feeling a profound connection to his fellow man’s suffering.

"He recognised that Kristallnacht was more than a distant eruption of violence, but the emergence of evil.

"We are gathered here to honour William Cooper’s action, to pay tribute to his courage, and to salute his vision. He was truly a unique individual.

"His legacy should be recognised and his message embraced.

"At a time when his people were experiencing their own hardships, he looked beyond and extended his hand to a humiliated and vulnerable people -– the Jews of Nazi Germany.

"William Cooper led the march to the offices of Hitler’s consulate in Melbourne, surrounded by Yorta Yorta people and the Australian Aborigines League, to protest the 'cruel persecution of the Jewish people by the Nazi government of Germany.'

"Alone they stood at the doors, and although their message was all but ignored at the time, it still echoes loudly from the pages of history.

"When the nations of the world shrugged their shoulders, when the leaders of the world ignored the cries of the innocent, William Cooper declared that he would not, he could not, be silent in the face of such evil.

"William Cooper’s greatness emanated from the fact that he was not only aware of the injustice being perpetrated against a far away people, but that he was willing to stand up and demonstrate his anger at these wrongs.

"At 77 years old, he was not yet a citizen of his own country, but he chose to speak up for a people with no voice, a community with no homeland, with rights that nobody was willing to defend.

"His deeds deserve to be commemorated precisely because it was at that time when voices needed to be heard most. Kristallnacht marked the point at which the Nazi regime realised no-one would stand up for the Jews.

"It was the point at which the international community could have stopped Hitler’s plan for a final solution, if only there were men and women willing to make their voices heard.

"If there were more like William Cooper in every nation of the world then perhaps, just perhaps, the Jews of Europe may have defied their fate.

"We are all here today to honour William Cooper. He deserves to be remembered as a hero to the Jewish people and an inspiration to mankind.

"His message is clear: the convenience of silence is as evil as the greatest crime. Yet it seems that, in some corners of the world, people have forgotten the example of William Cooper.

"The world is still facing the same sort of battles that were fought 70 years ago. There are still voices that call for the destruction of our communities and nations, small and large.

"Voices that introduce instability and sponsor terrorism in all corners of the globe. These are the voices of a real evil, yet they go unchallenged, unanswered, and unaddressed: in particular, the voice that calls from Tehran.

"Today the threats are of a different character, though no less hateful or intolerant. Their statements may be different, though the meaning is horribly familiar.

"These voices must be confronted, their ideologies questioned, and their rhetoric contained.

"Clearly, the importance of taking a stand has never wavered. It is just as relevant today as when William Cooper stood at the gates of the German consulate in 1938.

"His act of courage should never be forgotten.

"Nor should we forget the importance of speaking up for what is right. In this era of new threats, we cannot afford the luxury of inaction, indifference, and silence.

"Now, more than ever, we must remember William Cooper’s example. We can all honour his legacy by pursuing the ideal of the great philosopher and statesman Edmund Burke, who over 200 years ago warned: all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

History sometimes creates interesting footnotes. When Cooper tried to present the petition to the German Consul in Melbourne, he flatly refused to accept it, or even acknowledge Cooper. At the above occasion, the current German Consul General, Dr. Schleich, was one of the special guests.

Youth movement Hashomer Hatzair comes of age

MELBOURNE - "Hashy" as it is affectionately known is celebrating its 55th anniversary next week in Melbourne.

Started in Australia in the 1950s as a breakaway from Habonim Dror, Hashomer Hatzair, or Hashy as it is affectionately known, began as a socialist movement advocating aliyah to affiliated Israeli kibbutzim.

“Hashy’s 55th anniversary shows our longevity and ideological fervour,” Hashy’s mazkirah (secretary), Hannah Reich, told The AJN. “Fifty-five years means more than half-a-century of empowering and educating young people and giving left-wing secular youth in the Jewish community a voice and a home.”

Today, with about 100 members, Hashy focuses on empowering Jewish youth, developing secular Jewish identities, working towards a better Israel and promoting socialist principles within Australia and beyond.

To mark the anniversary, the movement will host the Summer Night’s Festival, where past and present members will come together to socialise, reminisce and see where Hashy is now, and where the movement is heading.

Margo walks off with second Walkley Award

MELBOURNE - Acclaimed Jewish journalist Jill Margo has won two major media prizes -– including the coveted Walkley Award (the Walkley Awards are the highest accolades in Australian journalism( -– for a series of articles about a terminally ill woman battling to access her superannuation.

Published in The Australian Financial Review last September, the stories highlighted the injustice of superannuation rules, which prevented 43-year-old breast cancer sufferer Christine Fiddimore from an early tax-free payout because of her age.

Titled “The Terminally Ill Deserve Better”, the stories eventually led to the government overturning those rules, finalised just three days after Fiddimore’s death.

The stories also earned Margo -– with subeditor Steve Georgopoulos -– her second Walkley Award for Social Equity Journalism. Her previous win was in the Newspaper Feature Writing category in 2001.

Margo also recently picked up the 2008 United Nations Media Peace Award for Best Print News.

“The story raised two matters previously unrelated in the public mind: terminal illness and superannuation. It was a topic no-one had covered before,” said the Walkley judges.

Margo said she was gratified by the win.

“There was an anomaly in the tax legislation that needed to be changed, and this story helped ensure that,” she said. “In my 30 years in journalism, I can’t ever recall an opportunity like this, where such an obvious injustice could so easily be rectified.”

On sustaining her journalistic passion over the years, she added: “You have low periods, where very little happens and everything is just routine and mundane reporting.

But occasionally, you hit a bright patch ... and the sun is out and you’re full of energy. But it is intermittent and rare. I’m in the nursery at the moment I’m nurturing a few small stories, but I don’t know how many will flourish.”

Suddenly, there was Al Hutler's protégé

SAN DIEGO—Sometimes a name just seems to jump off the page catching the reader’s eye. That’s exactly what happened to me as I was reading the Arts section of the New York Times on November 12th. The name was one from the past, but from someone who is very much alive and kicking today.

The man in question is truly a hero who has made, and continues to make, his mark on the Jewish community. I have only met him once, but know about him from the late Al Hutler, the first executive director of San Diego’s United Jewish Federation. Al was my mentor many years ago when I first came to San Diego. Over the years we were quite close working together on fund raising efforts on behalf of the Israel Tennis Centers, the Hebrew Home and the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center.

It was at Al’s suggestion that I was first introduced to the management of Sharp Memorial Hospital back in the 1970's, a relationship that lasted for over eight years.

During the course of many hours spent with Al, he told me about the young boy that he had "adopted" from the concentration camps and had helped to bring over to this country. Al had been on General Eisenhower’s staff and was responsible for emptying the concentration camps.

Al was very proud of the young man Ernest W. Michel had become. Among his many achievements, Michel was the powerful Executive Director of New York’s UJF.

I can remember the touching speech he made at Al’s retirement as chief fund raiser for the Lawrence JCC. Michel spoke as would a proud son with great love and tenderness for the man who had so influenced his life, his very existence. At this point, Al’s fight with Alzheimer's had begun to show, but it was clear that he was very touched by his "son’s" special trip to San Diego for the moving event.

Al’s been gone for quite some time now and I have not heard about Michel for a number of years. However, his name just leaped off the page of the article entitled "piano works by those who escaped the Nazis." The concert, "Music in Exile: Émigré Composers of the 1930's," was introduced by Michel on the anniversary of Kristallnact, at the Museum of Jewish History in Manhattan.

The Times described the concert as "an ambitious, five day overview of Jewish composers whose careers were derailed during the Nazi era– presented as a living memorial to the Holocaust." The series focused mostly on composers who escaped to Britain, the Soviet Union and the USA.

Before the opening night performance by Toronto’s Artists of the Royal Conservatory, Michel, a Museum Trustee, spoke about his memories of Kristallnacht when he was 15 years old. Conductor James Conlon, the performers’ honorary chairman, also addressed the audience about the importance of performing the forgotten music of the era.

Hadassah To Hold Ninth Annual Donor Luncheon

The Ninth Annual Donor Luncheon of the San Diego chapter of Hadassah, which will take place on Tuesday, June 13th, at the El Cortez Hotel promises to be one function not soon to be forgotten. Considered to be a “scoop” for San Diego, will be the guest speaker, Mrs. Moses P.  (Judith) Epstein of New York, who is making a flying visit to the West Coast to make a few personal appearances.  Her background has been very unusual and important.  As National Zionist Public Relations Chairman of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, she is one of those rare women who at once molds and is molded by a movement. Her life has been bound up with Hadassah for decades, and few in the leadership of Zionist affairs have failed to know the effect of her vibrant personality.

She has come to be regarded as one of the most eloquent and authoritative spokesmen on the Middle East. Radio forums, university seminars, community meetings constantly seek Mrs. Epstein as a featured speaker on the Zionist issue.

In 1920, seven years after Henrietta Szold founded Hadassah, Mrs. Epstein organized the first Far Rockaway Chapter of Hadassah. She vividly recalls door-to-door campaigning for membership and funds while wheeling her little son in his baby carriage.  She rapidly became a national figure in Hadassah.  She has served as Hadassah delegate to the world Zionist conclaves in Switzerland, was elected Hadassah’s National President from 1937 to 1939 and again from 1943 to 1947, and is presently a member of the World Zionists Actions Committee, participating in the crucial decisions made by that body during the past two years. A woman who can think on her feet,  one who handles facts with dispatch and finesse, Mrs. Epstein is a speaker whose long experience with American audiences and keen observations on her many trips to Israel give her top priority with audiences throughout the country.

As one of the most important functions of the Donor Luncheon, the installation of the new officers will take place.  A brief and unique service will be conducted by Mrs. Al Krasnow.  Those being installed are: Mrs. Al Slayan, President; Mrs. Sidney Goldhammer, first vice president; Mrs. David Block, second vice president; Mrs. Morton Thaler, third vice president; Mrs. Harry Rosetha, financial secretary; Mrs. Edward Kitaen, recording secretary; Mrs. Leon Solomon, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Hyman Kitaen, treasurer; Mrs. Isador Teacher, auditor, and Mrs. Louis Bickman and Mrs. Julius Levine, parliamentarians.

For entertainment, Hollywood talent has been obtained for the light side of the program. Also included in the program ill the Hadassah quartette, consisting of Members Julia Kaufman, Ann Zukerman, Lee Greenberg and Silvia Bickman singing the Hadassah theme song.

San Diego Responds To Plea From UJA with $25,000

Answering the United Jewish Appeal’s desperate plans for cash, the United Jewish Fund has just forwarded another $25,000 of borrowed funds bringing the total advance payment to the United Jewish Appeal for 1950 to $75,000, according to Max Rabinowitz, treasurer.

In order to secure the cash with which to pay back the loan, workers are continuing to pound away at prospects who have not as yet made their contribution, to get their pledges now.

Meeting at breakfast last Tuesday Board Members of the Fund gave up the entire day to solicit gifts from larger contributors who have not as yet made their pledge. Fund activity continued through the day.

Tuesday night the corps of Miracle Workers, under the direction of Morry Douglas, went from house to house to talk to prospects who had either refused or as yet had not shouldered their responsibility.

With at least a possible $33,000 in larger gifts, $10,000 in smaller gifts, still to be secured for the 1950 campaign, Murray Goodrich and Nathaniel Ratner, co-Chairmen and the Campaign Committee agreed that the drive will continue until at least last year’s figure is reached.

Goodrich and Ratner stated that while at this time, we are still running 9 percent better than 1949 the need for cash is so great that we must use every pressure to secure contributions now. Pointing out that at this time last year the drive had $153,355.00 in comparison to $161,000.00 on June 2nd, the chairman stated that every dollar contributed now is worth at least two dollars contributed at a later date.

Victor Schulman advised the Campaign Committee that if we fall behind the 1949 figure, it means reduced allocations to the United Jewish Appeal, to other overseas agencies, and to national religious institutions, hospitals and other national agencies.  He urges everyone who had not as yet given to shoulder their responsibility now, and if they are not contacted to forward their contribution to the United Jewish Fund immediately.


The Death of a Newspaper (Editorial)

As Editor and Publisher of this newspaper, I {Maxwell Kaufman} had a natural interest in the recent demise of the San Diego Daily Journal.  When the newspaper suspended, I strolled over to the Journal Building and roamed through the halls visiting the offices, composing rooms and press rooms now stilled.

I walked through the “Sports Department” and looked sadly at the photos scattered carelessly around on unused desks.  Neil Morgan’s cubby hole looked desolate. The “Society” room still had pictures of our leading citizens hanging crazily on the walls and the clippings telling of their activities cluttered the tops of desks and files. Eileen Jackson had hung her own picture over her desk under which was the word “Goodbye” as effective as any funeral wreath.

The rewrite desks stood forlorn and waiting as if any moment people would take their places at the curved counter and begin to furiously write the news pouring in from all over the world.

I hurried through the press rooms feeling uneasy among the giant machines that towered over me.  The potential power of those machines struck me forcibly. I suddenly thought that it was dangerous to have such things idle. It needed but a touch of a button to send them screaming into action again, doing what they were designed to do… work for some useful purpose.  Machines should not be allowed to stand idle—it’s unsafe for both men and machines.

The “Advertising Dept.” seemed exposed and unprepared for the blow that had fallen.  Dummies, proofs,l mats and pictures lay in disorder on every table.  The regiment of phones stood waiting for the rings that would not come.

On my way out, depressed and saddened, I turned to take one last look at the uninhabited and forlorn rooms. Was this the handiwork of modern man?  Was this the inevitable end result of our progress and economy?  Woe to you high and mighty “Fourth Estate!”  “The Pen is Mightier than the Sword!” Yes, but profit and loss are greater and stronger than both.

A shiver ran through me and I hurriedly left the building. The sky was overcast and the air wet on my face. I bent my head and walked quickly away.

Saying “Good-bye” to our own Ida and Abe Nasatir is a difficult thing to do. Somehow we cannot envisage the normal activities of the Jewish community continuing without either Ida or Abe taking some part.

We have always been proud of Abe’s scholarly achievements. In his quiet and unassuming way, “Doc” has achieved an enviable reputation in the national and international fields among historians.  We basked in his reflective glory whenever the recognition was paid to him.

As for Ida, she has left a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of everyone in this community.  Her unselfish devotion to every cause which would benefit her people served as a beacon light in this trouble world. 

In the normal course of events a year is not a very long time, but I am sure that their stay in Europe will make it possible for Ida and Abe Nasatir to further enrich this community when they return.
